New York’s Jail Population Falls to Lowest Level in 24 YearsNew York - Fewer inmates are behind bars in New York on any given day than at any time in the past 24 years, and the number admitted to the city’s jail system has fallen below 100,000 for the first time since 1987.

While the plunge in the city’s crime rate has undoubtedly been a critical factor, a number of other large cities where crime has also fallen have not seen a parallel drop in their jail population.
Instead, steps taken by the city, including special courts to deal with nonviolent offenders and programs to deter former convicts from returning to jail, appear to be bearing fruit.

to jail someone costs 100,000 plus a year. Changing some of the sentencing for non violent criminal to rehab or community work is cheaper and a much better way of dealing with those type of crimes.
Funny seems everybody wants people to sit in prison, but when the person is frum all of a sudden jail is stupid interesting

Yet you would want. SM Rubashkin to sit for crimes he was falsley accused of. And even what he was charged with was non violent.

A SMR was found guilty of fraud. The not guilty did not translate into the bank fraud federal case.
b. I said and can provide a link a year or two for the fraud should be enough
c. should a person sit in jail for years because they sold 2- 3 grams ($30) of crack the prisons are full of them because of the Rockefeller laws.
d. Because a person say a person is guilty based on evidence provided does not mean they hate frum jews just those that break the law and bring shame to all Jews
e. stop making the rubaskin family a family of righteous people, several have been convicted and sat in jail for fraud. Just do a simple search and see the righteous history
f I know many or most frum people i would make a business deal on a hand shake SMR is not one of them

we want people who BELONG in prison to be there..
that means criminals and people who are dangerous.
even if someone did something unlawful, some crimes are punishable with a fine or the like.

thank you very much, you do not know who I am btw when I was in the diamond business i would get 500.000 of diamonds no problem and left the industry with my good name enact.

true
however if one goes deep into the stats one will find thousands of people sitting in jail for many years because they sold a few dollars of crack, heroin, meth, ecstasy.
Do you really think that people should be in prison for years selling 10 or even 100 dollars of drugs.
I never said that violent people should be released. I just pointed out there are thousands of people sitting in jail for petty drug crimes. Let them out and use that space for real criminals.
In addition on a side note I think prison should be for punishment and for rehabilitation not because a am a bleeding heart. But because it is better for me and you if a higher percentage of people who get released become good honest citizens instead of getting out to commit the same crimes again.

crime has been going down every year for the last few years simple logic means less people in jail. To me that is a good thing.

please provide a link to my nazi philosophy. My father who was in Auschwitz would love to know, so would my mother who was a hidden child, and the rest of my family who where murdered by the Germans.
(ps on a side note they are really angry how the frum throw around nazi so easily, by doing that you are diminishing and belittling the memory of those who died and suffered in the Holocaust, I do not hear such talk from the secular)

Violent crime rates in Western Europe are far lower than in the US. Even though New York is in many respects the safest large city in America, London UK is only about 10% smaller but has fewer than half the homicides. Maybe we should see what they are doing there and learn from them?
(Israel also has a homicide rate about one third that of the US.)
