New York, NY - Banning smoking in parks and beaches appears to be such a hot issue that Mayor Bloomberg decided that it might be best to hand off the issue to his health commissioner.
Instead of saying at a press conference whether he supports a ban, the mayor turned to Dr. Tom Farley and said, “Tom, you want to say something?”
Farley said, “There’s a lot of options we want to be looking at as far as to reduce the smoking rate, and that’s one we need to look at.”
But the mayor still wouldn’t say whether he plans to implement such a ban.

The Mayor has a problem:
On the one hand he's intent on creating a nanny state: No trans-fats,No salt, congestion pricing, No smoking ANYWHERE.
but
If he limts the places in which a person can smoke, people will smoke less
and buy less cigarettes...which will decrease tax revenue for the city and state.
tough choice...
oh !! I have a good Idea why don't you tax soft drinks to make up for the loss of cigareete revenue by all the people who quit smoking?

actually although i don't either like to be told what to do... there needs to be a ban on smoking where ever you want... i personally cant stand smoke, it makes me sick and dizzy but Most (not all but the vast majority) are not considerate of other people.
I've walked down the street and have had smokers puff in my face!!!
how dare they?! even if it didn't make nauseous and sick , smoke inhalation is worse 2nd hand than first!!!
please think of others!!
nobody is stopping you, just trying to make things a bit more pleasant for non-smokers who put up with so much!

There is no excuse for smoking. Smoking kills and it hurts innocent people who do not smoke including children. Smokers have this mentality that it is OK to smoke and they have rights to. They think there are smokers and non-smokers and this is ok. They trivialize the dangers of smoking. Even by U.S. law they are allowed to smoke however, by Torah law they have no right to smoke and inflict harm upon themselves and others. Eveyone is aware of the dangers of smoking and have even known or heard of people who have died, had lungs cut out, and voice boxes removed etc. However, they are not aware of the harm they inflict upon others when they smoke. It is one thing to hurt yourself but you have no right to hurt others when you smoke. I can smell a cigarette two blocks away. When I smell a cigarette I get sick and start coughing. My doctor told me to stop smoking. I told him I never smoked a cigarette in my life. As a special education teacher I teach children who have mild to severe learning disabilities caused by their parent's smoking. What a crime these smokers have commited against their own children and others. Please stop hurting others and yourselves stop smoking!

When I was in line in a store a non-Jewish Russian woman was in front of me on line. She was not smoking but the cigarette stench that exuded from her long hair and coat was killing me. I started tearing profusely and began to choke. I told the woman that I couldn't take the smell. She told me that I should leave the store! This is the a terrible attitude. Again, I repeat smokers are hurting themselves and others. They are not legal criminals but they are moral criminals. Smokers often have emotional problems. Instead of going for help to a therapist they dismiss the magnatude of the terrible thing they are doing by smoking and continue to justify their smoking. I have gotten several people to stop smoking because I talked with them in a nice way about what they are doing. If everyone would let a smoker know that what they are doing is wrong and that they need to get help to stop smoking we could literly save lives. NYC has a stop smoking hotline dial 311 to get help to stop smoking!

In the apartment building accross the street from me a non-Jewish Russian fell asleep in bed while smoking. He was burnt and rushed to the hospital and not only was his apartment destroied but he dameged 3 other apartments. In my building there are many Russian smokers and smokers from all over the world. I worry about them doing the same thing as the man mentioned above. Smokers are murders or potential murderers. Can't you smokers get this into your heads. Smoking is murder. Quit smoking. No one has the right to smoke. It is destruction, murder, etc. We have to hire extra firefighters because of smokers. Smokers waste our tax dollars because of the medical drain they place on our hospitals and insurance companies. Why should drug stores be allowed to sell cigaretts. That is a controdiction. People associate drug stores with health so when they buy a cigarette at a drug stor they think that cigarettes are not so bad. Ban cigarettes period and especially from drug stores. Call NYC 311 to get help to stop smoking.

Reply #8 Cars are something we can't get rid of we need them.. However, smoking is totally useless and we can get rid of it. I like to go to the park to air out and relax. When someone is smoking in the park I can't take it. I start coughing and tearing and that other selfish idot person has ruined my only refuge and ability to relax. I hate smoking and I am very angry at anyone who smokes! I tell smokers get away from me you stink and you are a murderer of yourself and innocent children with your cancer stick. You are a criminal. You are hated by every decent person who doesn't smoke. I try to let smokers know they are socially unacceptable by covering my nose everytime a smoker passes me. Everyone should do the same. They should hold their noes when a smoker comes near. I have gotten many reactions from smokers and they feel embarrased and it makes them realize they are hurting others and that their smoking is not acceptable. If people don't intimidate smokers they think no one minds if they smoke and that it is acceptable. You can save lives if you issolate them and let them know that they and their cigarette are not wanted. Smokers please quit or get away from me!

It is one thing to want to do what you want to do where you want to do it. Murders say the same thing. Let me kill where I want to and when I want to and who I want to kill. As a smoker you trivialize the dangers of smoking. Because you smoke and lie to yourself that smoking is harmless it doesn't make the damage you do to yourself, your family, and the public any less criminal. All smokers do not realize how much they make non-smokers suffer from their stench. I tear, I choke, and suffer from cigarette smoke. Why should I suffer when I never smoked a cigarette in my life from the irresponsible smokers who do not even care about their own lives. Do not give me the garbage about a communist state. You are the communist you are hurting all decent people who don't smoke. I have absolutely no respect for anyone who smokes. I can only hope the ban goes thru. We don't need smokers near our children in parks and playgrounds! I was in the park with my kids and there was a heimishe man smoking right near the kids. When I asked him politely to stop, he said I didn't have to stay there!! Us yidden should know better! If ur smoking, at the very least don't force it on others, especially my kids!!

You are 1,000% correct. I have the same experience with smokers. They feel they have Hashem's given right to smoke and hurt others. They are selfish slobs who do not care about anyone even children. Whenever I see a smoker I say to myself there goes a mentaly ill, selfish, disgusting person. I stay away from smokers. I will not and do not have any friends who smoke. I consider every smoker to be a horrible digusting person to be avoided. I even yell at smokers in the streets to get away from me. If you look into smoker's eyes you will detect that they have a sick look which they project in their eyes.

Besides the terrible people smokers are by trying to kill the rest of us they throw their butts everywhere and anywhere they choose. I once had a store and I spent so much time having to clean up all the hundreds of butts the smokers threw on the floor in front of my store. They felt they the right to throw their butts in front of my store instead of putting in the garbage can I had paced in front of my store. This shows how disgusting smokers are.

Since when was smoking bad? back in the day people used to smoke and they lived happily ever after. You are saying that the thousands of lungs that are cut out every year in this world are only part of people's imaginations. You are saying that the thousands of cases of smokers reported each year of heart desease, lung desease, emphasima, high blood pressure, strokes etc. are all a myth. You are saying the over 100 toxic chemicals found in every cigarette can cause no harm. You are saying that all of the scientific research over the past 60 years is all a big lie. The overwhelming facts from hospial records, decades of scientific research, the over 100 toxic chemicals found in each cigarette, and the admittion of the cigarette companies themselves disproves what you have stated. All I am saying is, that it is possible that smoking kills, and it could be dangerous, just because the scientist say it`s bad doesn`t mean much like we saw by global warming. Now I am not a Scientist, but I know that people lived fine with smoking, everyone is different. There was this story, that once the Nazis YM"S wanted to see how people would react in a freezer so they put a whole bunch of people in a cart, including a professor to write down what happens. In short he wrote that after a half hour you get goose bumps, after one hour you become warm again, and after hour in a half he stopped writing, he died. They found out later that the freezer wasn`t even on! they forgot to turn on! so what killed him? what has writing? was he lying when he wrote down what he was going through? I don`t know. But all I can say is that when people decide that whatever it is, is going to harm you, it can, and it can even kill you! like in the story. Now I don`t touch cigarettes at all! and I am not delusional. I am just saying that the mind plays a big roll in this. It`s not the same as saying if I chop of your hand, or if I hurt you, that is your problem because, yes that is very evil!.
