“Do you sleep on your side?” Bloomie’s salesman Robert Goldstein asks. “Lay on it how you usually sleep.”

“It’s enveloping, isn’t it?” marvels the store’s merchandise veep James Coia.

    Zzzzzzzzzz. Oh! Yes!

“That’s okay,” says Bryan Umiker, Bloomingdale’s chief mattress buyer. “We’ve had people fall asleep here before.”

“It’s like a cake, and the ingredients are what make it plush,” Coia says. Layers of silk, cashmere, mohair, organic cotton felt and crimped wool.

“It’s got to be Joma wool from New Zealand, because that’s the softest. And natural latex, made from the sap of rubber trees.”

It feels amazing. What’s even more amazing is that about 100 people have bought the Palais Royale mattress and box spring since E.S. Kluft & Co. introduced it in 2008.

Imagine. And it doesn’t even have a headboard!

There were no lookers Thursday, but you have to wonder who can afford such king-sized luxury in these hard times.

Are they bankers who have trouble sleeping because they took fat bonuses after taking government bailouts and now feel guilty about it?

    Nah, probably not.

“These are people with resources,” Umiker understates. Okay, they’re wealthy people and celebrities, he admits, but won’t name names.

“Customers don’t come in here saying, ‘I want to spend $30,000 on a mattress,'” Goldstein says. “But once they try this, they’re sold.”

Staffers encourage couples to come in and try out the Palais Royale together, since it’s such a big buy.

“It’s all sewn together by hand, by 10 men,” Coia says. “It takes them about three days,” in the Kluft workshop in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Each spring is preciously encased in a pocket of calico cotton – all 1,681 of them.

“We spend one third of our lives sleeping, yet we keep the same mattress for years,” Goldstein says. “People will buy a new car every three years.”

Still, a $33,000 bed seems insane. Macy’s has a Serta on sale for $297 today. Sleepy’s has good deals.

My first thought when reading this news item was, that maybe an old lady had stuffed Thirty Thousand dollars into the mattress. Then it would be worthwhile to buy it because there may be other bundles of cash stuffed in on the other side.

My mattress costs $5,000 dollars and it’s a special no pressure points, orthopedic, multi position, massaging, and has cooling+heating comfort controls. $33,000 for a mattress that doesn’t do anything that my mattress does is a big rip-off.
