The Education Department is negotiating with the teachers union to change the first day of school to Monday, Sept. 13, officials told the News.
Students are now scheduled to start on Wednesday, Sept. 8, two days after Labor Day. But because of Rosh Hashanah, the second day of school wouldn’t be until the next Monday.
Panel for Educational Policy member Patrick Sullivan had considered proposing the change after receiving hundreds of e-mails supporting it.
“Parents and teachers are expecting the absentee rate to be so high on that day, it doesn’t make any sense to start until the following Monday,” he said.
Teachers must be at school on Tuesday, Sept. 7, to help set up before the students arrive. “If they want to do it, they don’t need our permission,” said teachers union President Michael Mulgrew.
An education spokeswoman confirmed the talks.
“We hope to have a resolution soon, and, when we do, we’ll communicate it to parents,” Ann Forte said.
well like half off all the teachers are jewish
It wasn’t until 1961 that the N.Y.C. public schools were closed on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Years ago, the city schools would not begin until a week after Labor Day.
The yomim noraim are the most heilege days on the yiddeshe calendar and yidden of all beliefs take off from work….it would be better for them not to cancel classes on other yom tovim like succos and pesach so they can take off on Rosh Hashana
Simpler solution. Make opening day Wednesday the 1st, close for Labor Day on the 6th and have four school days under the belt before RH.
My kids’ yeshiva is starting Aug. 31, before Labor Day, early for the east coast.
my kids are starting on the 30th. a little too early for my liking. one big problem with the public schools not starting until much later is that the busses do not start until they do.
Why didn’t they bother looking at the calander a little bit earlier? Most mosdos and yeshivos look at the next years calander by February or March. My registration letter for next yeat came right after Purim. Is there some sort of mental block to look when the next year’s school calander works out. What day of the week, what day of the month, when is Labor Day and the like. Maybe the school district just hopes that the students will burn down all the school buildings and there will bw no school next year and they will just live on pensions.
luke…you obviously don’t work for the DOE. why would anyone want to end their summer earlier?? you kidding me!
I love how they are all reporting that the DOE is in negotiations with the UFT to change the calendar. The DOE has the power to change the structure as long as the overall numberof instructtional days does not change. In this case it is a simple swap. Instead of an instructional day in September and a Professional development day in June, there would be a PD day in September and an instructional day in June. Makes sense and the Union is on board. So where is the problem Chancellor Klien?
