Monroe, NY - A taxi driver has been charged with assaulting a 17-year-old Monroe girl while driving her home from Woodbury at night. Osvaldo Romero, 22, was arraigned on a first-degree assault charge in Woodbury Town Court and sent to Orange County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Romero, who drives for a Monroe-area car service company, had picked up the girl about 7:15 p.m. and was driving a short distance to her home when he stopped in a deserted, unlit area and assaulted her, state police investigators said. The driver and victim “had a previous relationship,” but hadn’t seen each other since May, investigators said. They didn’t identify the cab company and declined to specify where in Woodbury the attack allegedly took place.
