New York, NY- Driving in NYC Became A Real Nightmare |
|
New York, NY- Drivers across the city are leaning on their horns a little longer these days.
Nearly half of Big Apple commuters say their traffic nightmares have become worse in the past three years as drivers careen with even more reckless abandon and roads fall into disrepair, according to a survey released yesterday.
Bottlenecks and congestion have become so bad, the IBM report said, that 19 percent of drivers have at least once abandoned their commute and turned around, asking bosses to work from home.
“People have been saying, ‘Let’s fix this problem,’ but that shows they’re taking things into their own hands,” said report author Florence Hudson.
The respondents spouted off about their top roadway annoyances.
Ranked from No. 1, they are:
* Stop-and-go traffic.
* Aggressive drivers.
* Drivers who move too slowly.
* Not knowing how long it will take to get to work.
Road-tested New Yorkers had some special gripes, beginning with wild cabbies.
“They just don’t care. They don’t know how to drive,” said Beo Rajkumar, a BMW mechanic.
“I ride a motorcycle now to get around the traffic faster, and cabbies have twice knocked me down,” he said.
Others blame it on short-tempered motorists.
“Aggressive drivers give me road rage,” said Carlos Negron, 30, of Harlem.
He told of an incident on the FDR Drive when a driver cut across three lanes without signaling.
“I tried to catch up with him so I could give him some words,” he said. “I hate fast drivers—because they never make it anywhere faster.”
Other drivers blame pedestrians for increasing gridlock.
“It’s chaos sometimes, there’s no law enforcement,” said Scott Mager, a consultant at Deloitte.
Past studies have shown that New York has some of the most congested roadways in the nation, with the Cross Bronx Expressway leading the way.
Nineteen of the nation’s 50 worst bottlenecks are either in the five boroughs or nearby suburbs.
The researchers surveyed about 8,000 people worldwide, including 400 New Yorkers.

So when driving is harder, motorists leave their cars at home to take public transportation. But Bloomie will find a way to ticket them. We lose either way. You can't drive it - you can't park it.

Lets make more pedestrian walkways and bike lanes. I'm sure that would help.

If we had passed congestion pricing or bridge tolls, driving would be less of a pain.

Not the fault of bike lanes... but people like yourself who want to cram more cars onto our streets at the expense of humans.

All you need to do is force these motorists to spend a single day driving around the hell hole called Boro Park, and they will never complain about the rest of the city again.

Last year, was the first time in 45 years that I drove in Manhattan proper, during a normal workday. It was a bad mistake. I exited the FDR Drive at 42nd St., and proceeded West to 2nd Avenue. Traffic was horrendous, and the drivers drove worse than in Brooklyn. I decided to proceed South on 2nd Avenue, and return to the FDR Drive via 34th St. I was never so glad to get out of Manhattan traffic. The drivers acted like kamikaze pilots-completely suicidal. There was nothing in all my years of driving experience which could have prepared me for such meshuganah drivers. Even in Southern Florida, they drive better than Manhattan. At least in Brooklyn, there was room to maneuver.

driving gets worse and worse with each additional avenue getting bike lanes.
with each additional busy area getting sitting areas.
all it does is block up the traffic and back things up.
explain to me why an avenue that is 1 way for cars should ahve bike lanes on both sides? let the bikers also be allowed to only go one way.
bikes have carte blanche.
they dont pay any tax or registration fee and everything seems to be made to cater to them.
enuf already!

It's usually humans who occupy those cars...

Yes, but they are not operating as humans, but as 2000 pound hunks of dangerous metal, with voracious needs at odds with a human-scale city.

The implantation of bike lanes is causing havoc everywhere and is counterproductive to the goals of those that created this ludicrous plan. It causes more congestion, longer idling times which increases smog, more wasted work hours, and more irate drivers. Many of the bike lanes are hardly used. Bikers still use regular streets and until they are restricted to bike lanes only ( as commercial trucks are restricted to truck routes only ) they create dangerous safety issues with automobile drivers. Why do hard working people have to suffer through the hardships and costs created by these bike lanes that are basically used for pleasure purposes.
Why are bike riders given preferential treatment over people out there trying to make a living. A truck caught off a truck route is penalized 1000.00 for a first time offense and increases with further violations. The City is just making it harder and costlier to do business here, I observe certain streets where bike lanes were put that took away a lane of traffic which causes back ups blocks long and DO NOT SEE ONE BIKE travel this street for hours. This whole plan is completely illogical and should be rescinded.

Excuse me. The bike lanes are not there for the bikes. They are there to take away a lane of traffic, causing drivers to go there and get ticketed. Bloomie is invested in anything that makes owning a car more difficult, pressing us to do those things that can be taxed.

instead of antagonizing average people like the current admin...taxes, charges, fines etc...how 'bout "SOLUTIONS"
Heres an idea create affordable municipal parking athe edges of the city (down town, upper east, upper west etc)
you could use the undeveloped peirs to create municipal parking from which people would shuttle into the city and use mass transit ...its a win win
people from outside get access to the city and the city doesnt have to deal with as much congestion

We have real solutions (as opposed to your massive parking structure scheme) -- it's called congestion pricing.
