Miami, FL - So an Orthodox Jew foot doctor walks into a houseful of cameras… Uh, yeah, Andrew Gordon of Miami Beach will be a contestant in CBS’s long-running Big Brother summer series. He’s so dedicated to his religion that he’ll be observing Shabbat while in the house. That means he somehow won’t use electricity from Friday night through Saturday night while, of course, being surrounded by tons of electric filming equipment.

“It’s already going to be tough in that house, so it’s going to be even tougher dealing with these extra little things,” Gordon tells the Associated Press. “People are probably going to look at me as an outsider and wonder what I’m doing and why I’m not eating their food. It’s something I’ve had to explain my whole life as a practicing Jew. Whatever happens, I’ll deal with it.”

Advertisement:

Gordon will also bring his own cooking utensils into the house. Apparently, one of those utensils will be a big ol’ stirring spoon. He calls himself a “tall, cute, Jewish, single, doctor, father that’s very competitive and ready to stir the pot in the Big Brother house,” according to his CBS.com profile.

Gordon could be a plant, however. This season’s competition will include a house guest who’s not playing for the $500,000 grand prize but is secretly working against the others to sabotage them. Uh, actually in the interest of fighting stereotypes, maybe it’s not the best idea for CBS to have cast him as the saboteur.

Anyway, whatever, Gordon should feel right at home in the house. The Wrap reports, “The house this season will have an Art Deco theme, accented with palm tree groves and walls of glass. The furniture and colors will pay homage to vintage Miami.”

His name was Andrew but he grew up in a Hasidishe family? It looks like he's wearing a black felt kippah in that photo. Maybe he's just modern yeshivish or something. Miami seems to have a good number of those.

There are Chumras, and then there is straight Halacha.

Putting yourself in a position SPECIFICALLY to be video taped on Shabbos is NOT a P'sik Reisha D'lo Nicha Lei, like, for example walking by a neighbors home where there is a light with a motion detector.

The possibilities for Chilul Shabbos - D"rabonon, no matter how hard he tries - are impossible to ignore, being that everything done to video tape him on Shabbos is for his benefit - for him to win the half million

The cases of Amirah L'Akum are countless, since any goy doing anything to improve lighting on him for production purposes could also be considered for him.

I would love to see one P'Sak Halocho - in writing that would say this is not automatically osur on Shabbos

Andrew was always a good guy from a good family so please save any comment which judges him and portrays him in any other way. I wish him lots of Hatzlocha!

I'm shocked to know that the so called frum people here know more know about the details of these reality TV shows than some goyim. How and why do you exactly know that the women on this show wear skimpy bikinis? Someone is not busy enough learning toira, but busy with gossip and reality TV shows.

Stven Hill was frum and he was pretty makpid. TV has really discriminated against frum Jews anyway even in local advertisements. Uh, yeah, not quite. The Jewish guy on the Apprentice did not marry Ivanka. Ivanka married Charlie Kushner's son, Jared, and Ivanka did convert - I have heard that she does light shabbos candles and eats kosher - she's probably more religious and more practicing (I would never insult her with an adjective like "frum" which is a meaningless four letter word nowadays - today the term frum has little or no meaning) than Jared.

They did have a muslim on the show who was verbally attacked from the start for being truthful.

How dare you start critisizing the ntire Community. I dont know how you define Choshuva Rav but in this case he may have been Choshuv but not for this community. As far as the Bas mitzva from the amud. It was after davening was over whats wrong with that? just because its different then in your shul doesnt make the Rav - Rabbi Bixon any less choshuv than the former Rabbi Turk. Beth Isreal and Now Young Isreal are both Modern orthodox shuls that now have joined together. The women did not become less inappropriately dressed since Rabbi Bixon became the rabbi. Your insinuation that he allows certian things is disgusting.. You should go ask mechila especially since we just started the three weeks a time when yidden suffered tremendously. Shame on You.

Besides what does The new Rabbi have to do with Gordon joining a TV show. Do you realy believe that he took the time to consult Rabbi Bixon? Common

While I agree #12 is outta line, it is debatable what is a bigger busha to the community. Bixon allowing bas mitzvah girls to speak, or a frum yid on a tv show. I would go with the bas mitzvah girls since that will last for a while or atleast till they kick bixon out. This tv thing will die out.

In reality The fact that Gordon wants to be on a reality TV series is not a Busha on the community at all. The community did nothing to influence his descision. Maybe living in Miami Beach created a bug in his head that he needs some publicity this has nothing to do with the Commnity, Rabbi or Beth Israel and that issue should be removed from the equation entirely. As far as the Busha re: Bas Mitzvah story. I live in Miami Beach and can say with cetrtainty that the "Busha" lasted a week and then people changed the subject already. So there too it was a short stint that didnt last long and the main people who complained were those against the Merger anyway. As far as "till they kick him out" thats a good point, but I doubt they will kick him out for this issue. What will probably happen in the long run is some other petty fight. Ever since Beth Israel had attempted to Get rid of Rabbi Shapiro A"h who was a respected manhig of the community and then become more modern they have been on a down hill trend. They wont admit to it but had they taken Rabbi Ephraim shapiro as the rabbi after his father we wouldnt be having this discussion. Hind sight is 20-20

Rabbi Bixon is of the highest caliber and authority of Jewish law and Chosen Mishpat.
Many Have commented that he is modern Orthodox that is the furthest from the truth:

There is nothing modern in his advocacy in keeping Miami Beach's former traditions of Kosher supervision , not conforming to new authoritarian standards.

His advocacy to insure the status quoi on the most world renown respected local Bais Din.

His staunch advocacy to revert the standards of Tznius to the former traditions of Miami Beach of yesteryear.

His strong involvement and advocacy of the Miami Beach Eruv and it's time honored halachic standards.

The only thing modern that Rabbi Bixon has presented is the Kasherous approval of Sword Fish.

Rabbi Bixon is Breath of Fresh Air To A City That Has Backslided the Past Twenty Years Due To The Introduction of Ridiculous Upstarts and Transplants.

It's going to be harder for him in there than he imagines. He'll be closeted in a house with a bunch of non Jews, females who prance around in underwear. No minyan, no torah reading. cold food on shabbos. resentment from the others for his special treatment. how will he take off and put on his mic on shabbos? he is lucky though that it's BBUS; In BBUK he wouldnt have been able to take his own utensils in, and the evictions are on Friday night; plus there's lots of touchy-feelyness and flirting in the UK house. the US house is more based on gameplay. He can keep a low profile and do his own thing. But he won't be popular or have it easy. I hope he won't come off as a chilul hashem. I'm worried. Big Brother is HUGE in the US.

Here is an update for those interested.
The show has been on for almost a week and it's really not looking good for Andrew.
No one likes him in there, he has no friends, whereever he arrives everyone stops talking.
he'll probably be voted out in 2 weeks (he is immune from eviction the first week due to a task he undertook, otherwise he'd be out next week).
He hasnt really done anything wrong but they all suspect he is the mole that BB put in.
I feel a surge of pride every time I see him with his yarmulke or asking if some food or other is kosher. But I feel so bad for him that they dislike him already. I don't knwo what it is, I guess Jews really aren't cut out for programs like these. Poor andrew.

Yommim Noraim are coming up fast, you better get a move on...

Jul 09, 2010 at 07:13 PM anonymous Says:

How dare you comment on a community and Rabbi as you did? You have no right. Rabbi Bixon is precisely what our community needs, and he devotes himself tirelessly to every congregant's welfare. Whomever wrote that you should ask for mechilah is correct. You call yourself a religious person, while publicly criticizing others, including a Rabbi, with no basis and a horrible attitude. You've drawn negative conclusions from something out of his control. If a community member chooses to burglarize a house, are you going to blame our Rabbi for that too? Andrew Gordon is free to do what he chooses. That's for him to decide. And responsibility for his decisions, right or wrong, rests with him. You have to answer for yourself, and I think you should start thinking about how you're going to do that.

Jul 09, 2010 at 08:03 PM Anonymous Says:

As for Bat Mitzvah girls speaking, it takes place after shul is over! Men take off their tallisim prior to the speech. Shuls across the country do this. Unlike the uneducated voice above, R Bixon researched the issue and has support for his decision to permit this. A difference in opinion should not result in a bad tongue. If you were familiar with Halacha, you'd know that, too.

He is frustrated with very little kosher food though; he went to get some pitas for shalos seudos and they were all moldy and there was no other bread for him. he was ranting that he'd have to survive on chummus, cottage cheese and salsa! anyway I'll keep watching and hope he doest well.

We all are hypocrites in someway or another and we are all convenient Jews and when given the opportunity to roast someone else we feed on it - especially those on this site who are burning Andrew on the per-verbal stake. Andrew Gordon did not steal, kill or hurt anyone. He is on a game show to win money (prize) and will be faced with some questionable situations. We all hope he does the right thing - is that based on what we think is the right decision? He will do whats right for him, not you and me. We all deal with those situations on a daily basis and most of us have done something not within the guidelines of the Torah or secular law. Nobody is perfect (I CAN GUARANTEE THAT) - He is a good person, good father, good friend and very competitive :). I hope he wins and gives 10% to charity. Cut the guy some slack, watch and enjoy!!

I live in Miami Beach and daven in Beth Israel alongside Andrew Gordon. I am shocked and disgusted by all the critical comments publicly voiced abut his personal choice and about the Rabbi of our shul. There is perhaps no aveira greater than humilating a fellow Jew in public. Your contributors should think wice before submitting their negative and unfounded opinions for worldwide dissemination.

The show is not focusing on his religion as not to make a bigger deal then it has to be. Andrew davens 3 times a day everyday. watch the feeds and you won't have to ask the question. Or was it just a rhetorical comment from another hater with a ill informed, ignorant bias. good luck aseres ymei tshuva.
