Moscow - Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev is the first Russian head of state to visit Birobidjan, the capital of Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Region.

Medvedev was accompanied by Russia’s Chief Rabbi and senior Chabad-Lubavitch emissary Berel Lazar. Rabbi Lazar led the President on a tour of the local Jewish community center. The visit is part of a four day tour of the Russian Far East, where Medvedev will meet with members of the business community and attend a series of meetings at the city’s cultural center, synagogue and furniture factory.

Kenahorah, I wish my grandfather would have been alive to have seen this. He was conscripted into the Russian Army around 1908.

It's never too late to learn. Maybe because we're busy with the "Medineh" 25/8, there's no room to learn about Jewish history. Birobidjan is in far Asia, not far from the Chinese border. Stalin ימ"ש came up with this (bizarre) idea. He wanted to concentrate all the Jews in one area, away from the Russian Cities. He, essentially dumped the Jews (those few who were lured in with the promise of an "Autonomous" region.) in the middle of winter without proper housing or food. Many starved and were frozen to death. Some survived.
