Manhattan, NY - Andrew Cuomo in Favor of Building Mosque Near Ground Zero |
|
Manhattan, NY - Andrew Cuomo and his GOP challengers are splitting sharply on the hotly contested question of building a mosque near Ground Zero, even as they’re in surprising agreement on the need to cut taxes and spending.
Attorney General Cuomo said he favored building the mosque, which polls show is opposed by most city residents, including many who say it would be an insult to 9/11 victims.
Cuomo, who polls show is the overwhelming favorite to be the state’s next governor, said through a spokesman, “America is all about diversity and tolerance and, thus, we should let this project proceed, even though it may justifiably make some people uncomfortable and offend some of our sensibilities.”
Republican gubernatorial designee and one-time Long Island Rep. Rick Lazio “opposes the plan to build the Cordoba mosque across from Ground Zero, and shares the concerns of many over the [proposed mosque’s] imam’s view that Hamas is not a terrorist organization,” said his spokesman, Barney Keller.
“Rick views the questions surrounding the overseas sources of funding for this project as a potential security risk.”
Buffalo builder and megamillionaire Carl Paladino, a Tea Party activist expected to challenge Lazio in the GOP primary, said, “I am dead set against the mosque at Ground Zero because it’s an affront to Americans everywhere.
“It just doesn’t make sense to build a needlessly bold and insulting statement on hallowed ground where radical Islamists declared war on America.”
Meanwhile, Gov. Paterson weighed in, telling The Post he, too, favors construction of the mosque, as long as it’s not tied to a terrorist organization.
“Americans who practice Islam were among the thousands killed in the attack on our country on Sept. 11, 2001, and Muslim-Americans, like every other American, have the inalienable right to worship,” he said.
Cordoba House, comprising a community center and mosque, would be built at 45 Park Place, two blocks from the World Trade Center.

Cuomo is such a pol. He thinks such attitudes are going to cut ice witht he liberal Jewish left in NY. Unfortunately, he's most probably correct. Isn't it amazing the more liberal they are the more narrow and obscurantist they become. Let Israel or frum Yidden stand up for their rights, and their chorus of bleating is cacofonic. Common sense and the feelings of NYers should count Mr. Cuomo.

Americans wake up before its to late, this imam(sham) just wants to destroy america and freedom in general. This moslem terrorist friend is taking advantage of the American freedom of religion laws to try to kill and destroy our special Nation.

Cuomo is so sure of himself! We have to work hard to defeat this man. If he can not see what an insult it would be to build the Muslim trophy upon their great accomplishment, this man is not fit to be our Gov. We must work hard to defeat Cuomo.

All of the political leadership of New York favors building the mosque; its clearly legal even though it might upset a very samll fringe group of the 9/11 families. They can no longer exert any political influence and they will be ignored in this case and the Mosque will be built. We don't want anyone telling us where we can build a shul so we have no right to tell muslims where they can build their "shuls".

Their terrorist org and preaching should not stand on the same earth where human remains are still being discovered. We should fight this with everything we have and stand up for liberelisem.

What the heck are you smoking there???? A rcent poll showed a majority of New Yorkers are dead-set against it. It flabbergasted me that 1/3 actually were for it. It probably represented Moslems and dead-head liberals. Together, they'll be the end of us all, r'l.

Let's not forget that legalizing gay marriage is on the top of his list to accomplish in Albany should he be elected. He lost my vote long ago. Building this mosque is not about 1st Amendment Freedom of Religion; this is about showing the US how derailed and extreme the "fundamental" rights have become. They've done it in Israel by having the gov't sanction their rights to live freely and give them land. They turn back and attack them from within. Now go and build a new Freedom Tower and then provide the "peaceful" extremists (as we saw on the flotilla) a base a stone's throw away! How stupid can we get? When you suspect a middle eastern of being a terrorist, they allege racial profiling! Andrew, go to Turkey. NY doesn't need you.

Once again he is showing how the left has lost touch with America. If they allow a mosque ANYWHERE near the twin towers, the USA should bring the troops home NOW because there would no reason to fight the War on Terror. The muslims yemach sh'mom v'zichrom would look at it like a win, which it would be.
The political left in this country just doesnt get it. They dont get that we are at war with TERRORISTS and there is NO talking to them. They dont get that we are sick of being taxed to death. They dont get that most of the country is on to Obama and his tactics. We know we're being lied to whenever he opens his mouth. THEY ARE TOAST!

A "very small fringe group"?! What makes it either small or fringe? In fact it's the majority position; the only supporters of the mosque are a fringe group of politicians and dhimmi-at-heart. This is exactly the same as a proposal to build a German cultural center across the street from Auschwitz.

If they can block this mosque they can block shuls. We can't decide this one isn't okay. I support this, as well.

This is for those of you who dont understand the meaning of building mosques in specific locations.Islamic history and tradition dictates building a mosque as a sign of "victory" on ground that has been deemed as "conquered" by muslim armies.Dont think that ground zero is looked at any diff by muslims!!!
