New York - Underground Drill Slips, Tears Through NYC Street |
|
New York - New York City pedestrians have to check for passing cars before crossing the street. They also need to beware runaway drills.
A 15-foot drill creating a tunnel for an underground subway line slipped off course early Thursday and pierced through a city street.
The drill was testing the rock underneath Second Avenue near 90th Street where a new subway line is being constructed.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Aaron Donovan said there were no injuries. The hole was patched up before rush hour.
The drill broke ground in front of a Papa John’s pizzeria. An employee there said the hole was gone before the restaurant opened Thursday.
Donovan said drilling is on hold until the MTA can figure out what caused the problem. The subway line is planned to be completed by 2016.
