Levanon sent a note protesting the sentence to Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul Gheit, accusing the judiciary of “oppression and cruelty” and saying it reflected a bias against Carmen Weinstein because of her religion, the Egyptian daily Al-Jarida reported.
Carmen Weinstein was sentenced on Saturday to three years in jail after being convicted of defrauding an Egyptian businessman of three million Egyptian pounds (around 520,000 dollars).
She had sold him a building which did not belong to her and then refused to return his money, the court said.
There are less than 100 Egyptian Jews in the country. They are the remaining members of what was once the most vibrant community in the region, after the mass expulsion of Egyptian Jews in the 1950s.
Let them get out in time
Did she or didn’t she own the building that she took money for? What kind of news is this?
In the US she would get up to 25 years, mail fraud, bank fraud, etc.
If she did even something remotely fraudulent she is stupid.
All those Arab countries need is the minimal excuse to harass Jews.
And if she didn’t, well hashem yerachem. But what are Jews with some assests doing in dangerous Arab countries??
Carmen Weinstein is a very controversial figure and it may indeed be her activism that got her in trouble. On the other hand she may well have sold community property for her own benefit; she has been accused of this by members of the Egyptian Jewish community abroad.
Weinstein? is that a marrocan or turkish last name?
