In this file photo: Heroic Nanny Sandra Samuel carries away Moshal'e the son of Rabbi Holtzberg from the chabad house Mumbai after shooting on Wednesday this image was taken from TV Thursday Nov, 27, 2008.. Jerusalem - Interior Minister Eli Yishai has bestowed temporary residential status upon Sandra Samuel, the Indian nanny who saved the life of Moshe Holtzberg during the terror attack in Mumbai. The status is a first step towards permanent citizenship.
“This is a humanitarian move necessary for anyone who saves a Jewish life,” Yishai said Sunday.
The citizenship process began with an appeal by the Holtzbergs to the Interior Ministry. The extended family of Gavriel Holtzberg, who was murdered along with wife Rivka in the attack on the Chabad center in which they worked, asked that Samuel be allowed to remain in Israel in order to continue caring for Moshe.
Immediately upon her arrival in Israel a year and a half ago Samuel received a work permit, and sources say she will be granted full-fledged citizenship within a year.
“She risked her life in order to save Jews and we are obligated to take care of her,” the interior minister said. “The family has impressed upon me that she is vital to the continuing rehabilitation process, following the terrible disaster they have undergone.”
In an interview with CNN just days after the attack, Samuel recounted the harrowing rescue. “First thing is that a baby is very important for me and this baby is something very precious to me and that’s what made me just not think anything, just pick up the baby and run,” she said.
“When I hear gunshot, it’s not one or 20. It’s like a hundred gunshots,” she added. “Even I’m a mother of two children so I just pick up the baby and run. Does anyone think of dying at the moment when there’s a small, precious baby?”
Samuel said Moshe continued to ask about his mother, and that she wanted to stay in Israel for as long as he needed her.

This is outstanding! Non-Jews who love the Jewish people should be welcomed in Israel. The talmud has wonderful things to day about non-Jews who want to live in Eretz Yisrael.

This story makes me cry. Even though the gmara says "harugai malchus, ain kol berya yachola la'amod b'mchitzason", still little Moshele wants his mother in this world!

Sandra Samuel will not always be only in the hearts of the Holtzberg family--she will be in the hearts of all of us. Thank you Sandra for saving the life of little Moshe and helping heal the wound that is so deep in him and all of us. May the A-mighty G-d watch over you and your family all the days of your life.

What about the family she left in India? Doesn't she have children of her own there?

Why on earth would she want to become an Israeli citizen? And for how long does our Moshela need her? He needs a jewish mothers heart.
I'm wondering if she still wants to stay in Israel

You really do not get it- how long?Maybe forever- there is a bond that was formed because she is the only one left that was a part of his life in India and if it were not for Sandra there would be no Moshe- do you not get this?Do not not see that H's hand in all this is for a purpose-a bigger picture?do you think H' only sees "a Jew. mo's heart"????Are you that shallow and narrow-minded that you cannot see that this woman is the Divine intervention -so as far as I'm concerned she can stay in Israel forever and he may need her forever-bec she is his link to life!What- you think once you saved the little Jew. boy, you can go back now and ur services are no longer needed? It's that attitude you have that really bugs me-

Her family should also receive residence permits if they wish. She has children of her own to take care and they should not grow without her. This is stealing and we don't steal. She is already doing something marvelous by continuing to stay close to Moshele.
I share the doubts about having a nonjew spend many hours a day with a precious jewish child and basically raising him, but this is what the Holtzberg did in Mumbai. Many frum jews are like that, they are very busy with "seminars" "kiruv" and you name it, and their own children are left with nonjewish caretaker. I don't feel very happy about that and I would never do.
