Brooklyn, NY - For Air Safety, 400 Prospect Park Geese Are Killed |
|
Frank Manuel, 47, and Jadhier Jackson, 7, both of Brooklyn, fed swans at the lake in Prospect Park on Monday. Brooklyn, NY - They are a familiar sight around the lake in Prospect Park in Brooklyn: Canada geese, scores of them. To some residents of nearby neighborhoods, the birds and their fuzzy offspring are charming hints of wildlife amid the bricks of the city. Recently, when one was found with a crossbow bolt through its neck, park rangers tried to corral it to administer first aid.
But then, over the last few days, parkgoers noticed something strange.
The Canada geese were gone. All 400 of them.
On Monday, they learned the truth. Wildlife biologists and technicians descended on the park Thursday morning and netted the birds. The biologists, who work with the wildlife services division of the Department of Agriculture, then packed the geese two or three to a crate and took them to a facility where they were gassed with lethal doses of carbon dioxide, said Carol A. Bannerman, a spokeswoman for the wildlife services division.
The authorities have been thinning the region’s ranks of the geese since two of them flew into the engines of US Airways Flight 1549 in January 2009, forcing it to ditch in the Hudson River. Last summer, 1,200 were rounded up around the city. But the Prospect Park roundup appears to have been the single biggest episode. The goal is to eliminate all of the geese within seven miles of major area airports. Prospect Park is 6.5 miles in a direct line from both La Guardia Airport and Kennedy Airport.
Still, the scope of the Prospect Park episode mortified some of those who have grown fond of the geese.
“It’s a horrible end,” said Anne-Katrin Titze, who went to the park nearly every morning to feed the geese. “It’s eerie to see a whole population gone. There’s not one goose on this lake. It looks as though they’ve been Photoshopped out.”
In recent weeks, the Canada geese have begun their annual molting, meaning they could not fly. Their captures took advantage of this fact.
Ms. Bannerman said the measure was necessary.
“The thing to always remember in this New York situation is that we are talking about aviation and passenger and property safety,” she said. “In general, the resident Canada goose population has quadrupled in 20 years.”
Susan Elbin, conservation director at New York City Audubon, was cautiously supportive of mass euthanization. “There are ways to manage birds nonlethally,” she said. “But if you’re trying to manage a population level, sometimes those hard decisions need to be made.”
Gone in the roundup, apparently, was a goose known alternately as Sticky or Target, who was discovered with a crossbow bolt through his neck last month. Park rangers tried and failed to catch the bird, in a bid to help nurse him back to health. They were unaware that he would be gassed to death mere weeks later.
A goose found last season with a damaged beak, which Brooklynites living right outside the park had tried to help, was also believed to have been killed.
The absence of the birds was noticed by park enthusiasts and landscapers, though officials at Prospect Park were not notified of their removal. The geese there were believed to be year-round residents of the lake.

Prepare for demonstrations in the park. Oh, and death threats to the gov. officials behind this decision, after all - what's more important, the entire population of Canada geese, or some passengers on a plane?

How sad. One can't even come to the park and wonder at the beauty of wildlife. These animals got in the way of humans and they were all sent off to the gas chambers

i dont understand why they cant just re locate the birds to the woods instead of killing them. if they already got them rounded up they could just take them upstate, or to canada. i think its messed up.

Why not just clip the wings?? Those birds were a Brooklyn landmark. I'd take my daughter every Sunday to see them, they will surely be missed.

The thinning out of the thousands of Candian Geese, which hang out around the three major NYC airports, should have been done before Jan. 15, 2009, when flight 1549 was brought down. The Government knew about this problem for the last 50 years. In 1960, an Eastern Air Lines flight out of Boston was brought down by a flock of birds, killing over 50 passengers. PETA can whine about this problem, but it is better to have dead Canadian Geese, than dead airline passengers.

How far are these birds from the airport? Did they take away the swarms of geese around La Guardia and JFK?

A couple of points.
1. The geese that are to be eliminated are resident geese. Their only connection with our neighbor to the north is their name.
2. On the other hand, the geese that brought down USAir 1549 were migrating birds, not resident. No amount of shooing away from LaGuardia or JFK would have prevented that incident.
3. Why, when they have these geese elimination programs, don't they sell them for meat or donate them to food banks?

Well they should come to Lakewood, and do the same thing. We have sidewalks in Lakewood that are literally green from the geese droppings. You can wash it down, and the next day they are back. Do you want 60 geese in your front yard.
You cannot relocate these geese, as they fly right back. And if you clip there wings, they will anyways get killed by predators. As for shechting them, aside for they are carrying diseases, Minhag Askenaz is not to eat them.

A few years ago a number of Canada geese were killed in Rockland County with the intent of giving the meat to poor people and food banks. After testing the meat it was found that the geese had dangerous levels of pesticides and that the meat could not be used for food.

The geese are no more (or less) diseased than the poultry you buy in the store. Both require thorough cooking. I thought the kashrus sheila was on muskovey ducks. Even if Jews choose not to eat them, they can be slaughtered and sold to Gentiles.

I want to comment, as you seem to be splitting hairs. The "resident" geese as just as dangerous to commecial aviation, as their "meshpucha", the migrating geese. As long as the FAA has not developed standards to deal with 8-12 pound geese (the same kind which brought down Capt. Sullenberger's flight), they must be exterminated-whether they live near JFK, LaGuardia, or Newark, or they are flying over from another area. Incidentally, it was not advertised, but in June, 2009, thousands of Canadian Geese around NYC, were killed by federal and state authorities, in an effort to prevent another Flight 1549.

The poultry you buy in the store is raised on a farm, and is relatively free of vermin and diseases. Would you eat pigeons that were caught off the NYC streets? Or feral chickens that had grown up on city streets, eating who-knows-what?

What has minhag Ashkenaz got to do with it? We have no mesorah that this is a kosher species. Whose minhag is it to eat birds without a mesorah?

Well, I guess that's your perspective, but not mine. Have you read the book "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn. Considering adding it to your reading list. You might be shocked by what you read, and what you've said.
