Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan announced the installation of the public car charging station. It opened at a parking facility on Manhattan’s far West side.
Bloomberg says more than 100 other similar stations will open around the city by next September. The city has purchased about 10 electric cars and will buy about 40 more.
Coulumb Technologies CEO Richard Lowenthal, whose company is installing the chargers, said it could take less than four hours to charge a car.
The company was given $15 million by the Obama administration to make the chargers.
4 Hours to charge a car!? And we wonder why our economy is in shambles. Our government is spending money on projects unhelpful to the public. They really should let the free market decide what is wanted.
Hey! Not a bad idea..
Just imagine waiting 4 HOURS at the gas pump
what does it cost to charge up your car? I would love to plug my wife into one of these charges…maybe she’ll wake up
To an american Tipaish you can sell anything and everthing.
That is how they sold Hussein Obama to the American public.
Typical liberal stupidity. No one other than a bleeding heart liberal wacko would ever be interested in this. FOUR HOURS to ‘fill up’ a car?!?!?!?!
Thanks but I’ll take the car with ol fashioned GASOLINE.
clean energy? the electricity is generated from coal burning power plants, not so clean…
I can’t believe the nonsense people have expressed here! You go to a mall for, say 2 hours. You plug in your car – which is unlikely to be completely empty, and when you return it is pretty much fully charged. Why should we rely on the arab world for most of our energy. Electricity can be sourced from many different sources. Gas for our current type of autos can only come from crude oil. We all know where most of that comes from. Who remembers what the arab embargo of 1973 did to the economies of the western world?
Wow- they spent billions and nobody thought about how long it takes to charge. Only the geniuses here. Wow!
Wow…. I don’t even know where to begin. Such small-minded people here that can’t think outside of their own little box. You don’t drive this car for days on end and then fill up once like we do with a gasoline-fueled car. You charge it when you get home at night, or when you’re parked at the mall, or any other time you are not using it. That is the point. It costs about 20 cents on the dollar to power these things. Having public charging stations is just an added convenience but is certainly not necessary.
So, the city decides to go electric, save money on gas, spend their money on AMERICAN energy, using AMERICAN workers, and reduce the amount of pollutants in the air we breathe. Wow… what a horrible, communist idea! (sarcasm intended).
Keep in mind that these electric vehicles and the batteries for them are being made right here in the USA. The electricity they use is also being made right here in the USA. All with FAR less risk to the nation’s food supply & economy than drilling off the coast of FL and destroying our tourism businesses here.
The hospital where I work is putting electric charging stations in the parking garage. My next car, B”N, will be electric.
Sorry chana, ill see you tomorrow morning, just runing down to charge my car
Can someone tell me why we can’t produce REAL CLEAN cars by using SOLAR ENERGY?
This isn’t a car you should use if you want to charge ur self phone on the car. It uses the energy used to actually move the vehichle! If it charged in 15 min I get it. Or of you would swap a battery like a propane tank on a BBQ grill. This system just not smart!
Just think, have ur phone,i pod, blto, etc.this car will be charged every 12-15 min…
