Palo Alto, CA - Facebook, the social network created in the dormitories of Harvard six years ago, said on Wednesday that it now had 500 million members.

The company has grown at a meteoric pace, doubling in size from a year ago and pushing international competitors aside.

Each month, Facebook says, more than 30 billion photographs, links to Web sites and news articles are shared through the site, and its members spend roughly 700 billion minutes there.

To put yourself on Facebook is stupid.
Employers look at your profile and any information that they can glean which can only harm your chances.
Burglars look to see if you're going on vaction or will be away at a wedding. etc. etc.
You never know what kind of information you post will be used against you.
Also negative influences from "friends" always lurk.

STAY AWAY IF YOU HAVE ANY SECHEL!

That's totally ridiculous. You have privacy settings. Only your friends can see your posts and photos. FB is a wonderful way to share photos and keep up with friends and family. You can block anyone you don't want to have access to your FB page if you feel any negative influence.

#5 Naivete will only hurt. There doesn't go by a day when you can't find stories about people whose Facebook accounts have come back to haunt them and these are just the stories that make the media.
If you let your kid have a facebook account, don't be surprised at what you get. (it won't be good.)
Facebook and other social web sites are the most dangerous aspect of the web.

Facebook is an essential to modern communications and social relations. If you are at all competitive for a job, you would be judicial in what you post. In fact, I would think that allowing an employer to access your facebook might only increase your chances at landing the job since your employer could see where you are coming from and what you are all about! You'd have to be a complete fool to post personal information that is revealing of your comings and goings online. And no burgler is going to break into your house unless you allow that person to access your information. You are in control. This is society. Enjoy the social media. Its a blessed expereicnes!

Sadly, with any new invention, there are always the skeptics and hold outs. I'll say this. Its very disapointing when someone you knew well in a previous time period does not join facebook. Its a marvelous way to stay in touch. You dont need to memorize and write down emails. The photos people share are priceless and the memories it creates are endless. I wish more people would get with it and join social media. Its another front door to your life!

I wonder how long facebook can reign supreme? Remember back in the 90's when AOL ruled the internet, and look at them now? Down from 35 million subscribers to 6 and falling rapidly. Five years ago, MySpace was the ruler of social networking, and now they are falling apart. There is always a life cycle for these services and once something better comes along, facebook will be relegated to the sidelines.

People who want to connect with friends across the world are shallow? OK, you can stick to your 5 mile radius in Lake Wood thinking you're a pious saint.

Let me correct the facts - since I was reading that this information came directly from Facebook Blog.
700 million users = active and non-active
500 Million users strong = active and spending a relative amount of time.

In reply to Nebachs comments. He is generally right about certain people who spend all their time wasted on that site.
But I personally work in social media - which is a growing industry. My job is to socially interact with people and then give this information back to businesses who seek to perfect their services to their clientele. Social media has enabled many businesses to start interacting with their targeted audiences on a much more personal level and these businesses seek to create more of an experience rather than just get you to "Shop"

Good luck to all
