Waterloo, Canada - BlackBerry 6 Could Be RIM's Last Chance

Waterloo, Canada - Research In Motion’s future looks bleak. R.I.M., which makes the popular BlackBerry devices, has had a traditional stronghold in sales to American companies. But that has been cracked open.

Apple said last week that more than 80 percent of the Fortune 100 companies were testing or deploying its iPhone. Meanwhile, phones using Google’s Android operating system appear to be making inroads, too. That spells trouble for R.I.M.

Corporations and consumers used to be happy with handsets that served up e-mail reliably, promptly and securely. R.I.M.‘s products do this very well. Now, though, Android and Apple handsets adequately handle e-mail, while also doing much more. For instance, iPhone users can download about 30 times as many apps as are available to BlackBerry users, and the process is more user-friendly.

R.I.M.‘s share of the American smartphone market reflects this shift. It fell to 41 percent in the first quarter from 55 percent in the previous year, according to Gartner. The combined share held by iPhones and Android handsets rose to 49 percent, from 23 percent over the same period.

True, R.I.M.‘s sales in overseas markets are increasing, enabling it to hold its share of the global smartphone market more or less steady. But handset trends increasingly originate in the United States because of the growing importance of smartphone software.

Moreover, R.I.M.‘s overseas push has been accompanied by a sharp fall in the average price of its handsets. While phones are priced differently overseas, the suspicion is the company is losing pricing power. Nokia’s troubles, and the decline in its stock price, show that increasing volume doesn’t matter if prices fall too fast.

The BlackBerry maker’s shares may appear cheap. They trade at 10 times estimated earnings for this fiscal year. Yet Apple and Google’s dominance in apps means they are becoming de facto standards in the smartphone market. Technology companies that lose such wars often suffer shockingly fast profit declines.

R.I.M. still has a shot. This fall, it is due to introduce a new operating system, which might help it fight back. But time is running short.

I just switched from a bb curve to an android. The bb is a mature product that works well and is intuitive. The android is a computer with unfinished features and is a lousy telephone. If you mostly text and talk stay with the bb.

The Blackberry is the best smart phone for business users who use email a lot. The iPhone will never capture the business customer unless they offer a regular keypad and not just the Touch screen.

The bb seperates the men from the boys. The difference is in email. With bb u get it in 2 seconds, w/ iPhone u have to wait. And Wait. And wait some more. As a toy & for Aps, yes, the iPhone is better. But for business ppl, having an email conversation in real time, the BB KILLs the iPhone.

Having had a bb, now have iPhone 4. There's no comparison the iPhone Internet can compete with that of many netbooks. In terms of speed and display (even -flash). Then there's the os which is a pleasure to use. And top it off with 200,000 apps. Bb doesn't have a shot. Only advantage to bb is email which fetchs instantly as opposed to iPhone every ten minutes or so.

I am a BB addict. Imho the BB is the best all-around device ever created. Yes, the iphone looks like it isb flashier and more "tcorchkey" type but after an hour or two of use the battery dies and if all you want is a device
To show internet stuff, so by all means go for the iphone.
If you want instant email and messaging. And great phone and passable internet access, nothing, absoloutly nothing beats the BB.
If I was ceo of a major company the last thing I would give my employees

I am an iPhone business user at a large firm. A number of partners at my firm have switched over from BB to the iPhone, with no complaints. Exchange email on the iPhone is pretty fast, I get emails within seconds of getting them in Outlook.

The main advantage of the BB is the keypad, which makes it easy, easy, to write & fire off real fast. The iphone does not have a real keypad and its hard to type on.
And with the bb the e-mail's and texts are right on your desktop. I will never give up my bb.
Iphone's are for the apps and other toys, whereas the bb is for the big-boys for e-mail's etc

As an IT guy in the business for over 30 years. I hate them both...I use a 3 year old Sanyo heavy duty phone and it works like a charm. No text, no email, no SMS no IM no BS, just voice. These smart phones tether you to your desk 24/7 in the mistaken belief that you are being productive. If you cant pick up the phone and call me but have to hide behind an email then quite frankly I don't want to do business with you...Its thats simple..Call me old school but I've been at this for over 30 years and I still make a darn good living at it.

A. Assuming that the iphone is a better phone, the fact still remains that if you have it you automatically don't have good service (att tmobile) because its all about the network so what the point of the bentley without any gas? B. There's a reason why the blackberry is referred to as the wall street phone its the number one most efficient phone its not meant for jokers that are looking to have azillion apps its meant to be and is to the point. Now don't get me wrong I've used the iphone and I'm sure the technology is amazing and all and yes its very glitzy extremely cool but its for little girls not for businessmen. I mean how in the world am I supposed to type an email quickly on an iphone? Will someone please explain? Am I missing something?

I use a blackberry by ATT its by far the fastest network doesn't even come close to verizon and sprint. I can send email, surf the net even while talking on the phone. You try that!

Oh no, what will they call these new users? I'm an acknowledged "crackberry" user and won't give it up. My emails often are received by my BB before they show up on my desktop in Outlook. Do i really need an iPhone all that tells me how to polish my shoes etc.

Just switched from BB (on Verizon) to the Evo 4G (Android - Sprint). After using my new phone for a few weeks now, I can confidently say that BB is waaaay behind on just about everything. Furthermore I picked up a very weak 4G signal (probably testing it before the August rollout), did a speed test and got over 4mbps as compared to the
