The embarrassing flap occurred Friday night, when Det. Martin Brown, who is assigned to the Police Commissioner’s Liaison Unit, showed up at Mosque No. 7, at 106 West 127th Street after allegations that local youths were roughed up by cops from the 32nd Precinct, sources said.

When Brown showed up at the mosque — the scene of a horrific 1972 cop killing — the official who had invited him, Abdul Kareem Muhammad, the head of the Harlem Clergy and Community Leaders Coalition, did not let him enter because of his gun and shield, sources said.

“It was a misunderstanding, one borne of ignorance,” said one police official.

Those items are barred under the mosque’s rules of worship – and the news touched off a few minutes of awkwardness as Brown patiently waited outside the mosque.

The mosque’s imam, Abdul Hafeez Muhammad, then greeted Brown and apologized, but reiterated the fact that he would not be allowed inside to attend the meeting, where other community leaders were in attendance, because of his gun and shield.

“He refused to comply with the demand. He wasn’t going to relinquish his weapon,” an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Brown, who was not made aware of the mosque’s rules beforehand, left without fanfare a short time later, sources said.

One police source was less forgiving, insisting it was a slap, however inadvertent, to the Police Commissioner’s authority, particularly since the detective had showed up in act of conciliation and outreach to the Harlem community.

The same mosque was once headed by the Rev. Louis Farrakhan and is the site of one of the most embarrassing chapters in New York City history. On April 14, 1972, Police Officer Philip Cardillo was fatally shot when he and a partner responded to a phony 911 call and were trapped inside by a mob of Nation of Islam members.

A police officer should never relinquish his weapon. The mosque should be blacklisted and pd should never respond there.

Perfect… let them build a Mosque…. do not let NYPD in with guns and badges…. Perfect setup… Are they blind to what’s happening?? We Americans must seem quite stupid to them.

First off, no guns allowed but flying airplanes into buildings is absolutely ok by these ‘choleras’. Secondly, why is his shield not allowed in, that’s not a weapon. I guess they despise authority that keeps them in check not to commit any atrocities in our city. Let them rot in there.

Amazing. I wonder if his gun AND shield are forbidden. If it’s just the gun, that’s just plain crazy and near-sighted on the part of the mosque. But if it’s his gun AND his badge that are forbidden, then it’s a HUGE slap in the face to the police. How can they expect the police to protect them when they “spit” on the symbol of the police by not allowing it to enter their building?!

Lehavdil…. how can yidden be so lacking in respect for some religious rule.
should some female senator be offended if chasidishe rebbe doesn’t shake hands with her?
should some non jewish whatever be offended because u won’t eat dinner with him?
I don’t know anything about their religion but if some mosque wants no guns I think its a decent rule.
why didn’t the nypd have enuf sensitivity training to know this?
furthermore how did this community liason go on his job for yrs without ever visiting this mosque?

if I were a cop, I’d never walk into a lions den without my gun and shield! after all these people are accused of committing, I would rather not enter!

This is the beginning of a radical takeover!. first their mosques are off limits to the cops, they then have “freedom of religion” to train plan and carry out, etc. their vicious religions edicts. Let them all get to go to hell….. there they can dream of the 72 virgins.

Trapped inside? shot? How did he get shot if they don’t allow guns? The answer is… They don’t allow non-moslems inside with guns. Everyone else carries.
