Albany, NY – Hundreds of thousands of dollars of state funding were yanked from many Jewish groups, with Governor David Paterson’s new budget, that passed this week, (as was reported first here by Vos Iz Neias).

The Jewish groups to be affected include Agudath Israel of America, Ohel and countless JCCs in New York.

The Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) – a source of millions of dollars for post high school yeshivas – was also on the chopping block. Reports say that Governor Paterson supported the program when he considered running for re-election, only to veto it coincident to his dropping out of the gubernatorial race.

Paterson’s defenders contend that the TAP funding was strung to a larger spending bill that the Governor did not want to see passed.

Funding could still be reintroduced, but this would require the assent of all three Albany leaders: the Governor, the Speaker and the Senate Leader.

So what else is news? A politician promises when he runs for office millions of dollars from taxpayers money then when he doesn’t need you he throws you under the bus that’s what politicians do every day

Agudah and Ohel……. were these not the scoundrels who lobbied against opening a one year window in the statute of limitations to allow for the prosecution of pedophiles? They should really not get tax monies nor our contributions.

    OH NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I hope Agudah will still have enough money to send me my annual 16 month catalog with those nice pictures of Agudah members and the politicians who screw them.

This is not something for Agudah & Ohel, this is something that affects all bigger Yeshivas. In now days the Yeshivas really struggle hard to break even, the parents don’t have the money to pay tuition, it would’ve been a great help for the Yeahivas to keep going. Chaval. By the way New Jersey Yeshivas all get this kind of State funding for years, while NY only gets the Federal grant. In this economy it would be a great help.

This is unfortunate, but the state is broke. What taxes should be raised to provide this funding?

    # 3 and # 4 paskunyak(you really are one) you can have my calendar. as far as yeshivas having no money. i am not so sure about that fact. A number of years ago a prominent Brooklyn yeshiva asked a friend of mine if he would be guest of honor, and help bring in some real money into the yeshiva’s coffers. this friend happens to be a well to do CPA and a financial consultant too. He promised the yeshiva a very large sum of money IF the yeshiva can really show despondency, and to let him go thru their books,to see where the financial problems lay. seems fair to me, But the yeshiva wouldnt open up their books. To make a long story short,of course he never accepted the guest of honor position, and the yeshiva never got his big bucks either.
I am not using this story to be critical of yeshivas, but there might be more to these yeshiva stories, than meets the eye. nuff said.

Mosdos should be funded by Baalei Tzedakah! If we would all unite under one umbrealls we could fund raise from the tens of thousnds of non affiliated Jews.

Is this when Councilman David Greenfield issues a press release on how “outraged” he is and fires off a letter “demanding” funding for community organizations?

Or will he skip the infamous press release because Agudah backed his opponent?

Or yet maybe he will support them because they joined forces with him to strike down the Child Protections Act.
