Brooklyn, NY – Dov Hikind: Mayor Bloomberg’s Defense of Ground Zero Mosque Is Pure Chutzpah

Brooklyn, NY – Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) today denounced Mayor Bloomberg for his recent sanctimonious remarks regarding the proposed site of the Islamic community center and mosque just blocks away from Ground Zero.

“Mayor Bloomberg’s behavior is outrageous. He owes an apology to all New Yorkers,” said Hikind. “His remarks were insulting, degrading, and condescending. While Mayor Bloomberg is entitled to his point of view, he should not impugn others who have a differing opinion. The Mayor needs to get off his high horse, stop lecturing us, and acknowledge that other people have legitimate points of view.”

Hikind also questioned Bloomberg’s apparent indifference about the funding for the mosque and community center. “Why isn’t the Mayor more concerned about following the money trail?” Hikind asked. “People have a right to be worried. Historically, there have been enough instances where terrorist monies were used to fund seemingly innocuous projects. The Mayor’s behavior can only be classified as pure chutzpah.”

I was waiting for Hikind to jump in front of the cameras on this issue. What was he waiting for? He is usually the first to promote himself on what politicians call “wedge” issues that divide the community. Mazel tov Dov(albeit belated).

Congratulations Dov. Emporer Mike should be ashamed of himself for supporting something within sight of Grund Zero whose sole purpose is to rub it into our faces.

I really do not know much about Mr. Hikind as I am not a New Yorker, but judging from his language and remarks, I have a feeling he is quite a narcissist. I personaly did not see any problem with the Mayor’s remarks and it made me rethink my own feelings on this topic. Mr. Hikind seems to want to denigrate the mayor with remarks like “get off your high horse” which seem of little constructive value. Would the list care to discuss more or Mr Hikind’s politics for us non New Yorkers to learn?

Thank you Dov Hikind. Please don’t back down from this. Bloomberg just doesn’t understand (or care) that not just NYers but the entire country is still traumatized by the events of 9/11. Bloomberg has a security detail but the rest of us don’t. All sorts of awful things happen and average Americans shake their head and go about their business, but not with this – it has really touched a nerve. I don’t think average Americans care so much what happens in Europe, but I think this is finally the wake up call that it could – and is – happening here too.

it’s not about freedom of religion as bloomberg keeps insisting.this imam refuses to denounce hamas in any way.he publicly stated that the US was partially responsible for 9-11 because of our actions in the middle east and as hikind says, follow the money as to where funding for this mosque is coming from.

It is chutzpah to defend the right of a property owner to develop his property in accordance with existing zoning laws?

i almost always agree with Dov, but not this time, it’s wishful thinking that you can stop this project, it’s a loosing battle from the start. i am not here to defend the great mayor of NY, he doesn’t need my defense. the mayor of any city can’t stop anyone from opening a shull, he can’t stop the opening of lehavdil a mo sq or a church, the mayor knows what the end result will be, so why fight a loosing war. besides with the building of the mo sq at ground zero, we can rebuild the world trade center, with 20 more stories, the mo sq will be the best insurance against a future attacks by the terrorists, on a 2nd taught, maybe the opposite is true, look whats happening to the mo sq in Baghdad, and Afghanistan, between rival terrorists group. they are bombing each other to death almost every week.
btw. has any one noticed whats happening in Pakistan lately, since they released the head of the terrorist group that was responsible for the attack on Chabad Mumbai, one disaster after another with floods etc. many dead and many more homeless i am sure it’s a punishment by g-d for what they did to gabi & rivki Holtzberg, and if they will not punish the terrorists, who knows what else is in store for them

The Mayor is entitled to his opinion, The Muslims are entitled to have their Mosque, and Dov is entitled to look for an opportunity for his name and picture in the papers.

What has to happen for this proposed site to be stopped?

this country used to be a democracy where the voter had his/her say, our esteemed mayor changed that when he “convinced” city council to let him be mayor again (because nobody else is smart enough like he is) to raise taxes, water etc..so he does sit on his “high horse” and tells us little poor people what’s good or bad..when 61%of the people feel differently…….I guess billions do talk..he should have put his head in tha sand with shame when his 100+mil only beat his opponent with less then 5% of the electorate when he spend just under 10 mil. we the people “oilam goilam” are to blame – he bought us- and now we need to live with him 3 more years if he doesn’t buy other ways to run and OWN new york again….shame on us

    #15 ,

The way to stop the Cordoba project would be to take the property by eminent domain, which would cost between 4 and 5 million dollars plus legal expenses. It would be at least as great an abuse of eminent domain as the Atlantic Yards project or the famous Kelo v. New London case. Funny how conservatives *used* to scream about big government.

To the poster “Says:”….you bash Dov Hikind and then post remarks that you really don’t know much about him since you are not a New Yorker. Again I say what gives?….your posts go one way then go another way. BTW I agree with Dov’s comments.
