California – Dr. Laura Schlessinger Quits Radio Show After N-Word Controversy

California – Dr. Laura Schlessinger announced on “Larry King Live” Tuesday that she would not be continuing her radio show after her contract with Talk Radio Network expires at the end of the year.

The radio personality told King, “I’ve made the decision not to do radio anymore. The reason is I want to regain my First Amendment rights.”

Over the past week, Schlessinger, 63, has been under attack for using the n-word 11 times in five minutes on August 10, when she was trying to make a point about racism to an African-American caller to her show. When the caller pressed Schlessinger about her free use of the racial epithet, the host responded: “Oh, then I guess you don’t watch HBO or listen to any black comedians. My dear, the point I am trying to make … [is that] we’ve got a black man as president and we’ve got more complaining about racism than ever. I think that’s hilarious.”

During her interview with King, Schlessinger said that she wanted “to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I’m sort of done with that.”

She also adamantly denied she was retiring. “I’m too young for that, and I’m not quitting,” she said. “I will be stronger and freer to say my mind through my books, my YouTube Channel, my blog and my website. And I’ll be on TV more, because I’ll have the freedom to speak my mind.”

Good riddance. She has never had much useful to say but in recent years she has become a real busha in terms of her sexist and racist commentary and rants. Having a jewish woman making such comments only makes it worse.

Bottom line is: Why is a word racist if its people use it freely?
If it’s racist, no one may say it. If blacks say it, it evidently isn’t racist.
Blacks LIKE to play victim and use it against you. That’s all.

Even though I often agreed with “Dr. Laura” I disliked her manipulation of her callers. There is a deep undercurrent of disrepect in the way she, with her finger on the red button, used her many callers who were at the mercy of her radio experience and ultimate control of the conversation. Fair play is not in her play book.

Maybe she and Ann Coulter can get together and host a game show together or something.

I could never stand Dr. Laura; she continuously abuses people who call into her radioshow. About a year a, Don Imus, who used a similar ethnic expression was forced to give up his tv program. One would have thought that Dr. Laura would have learned a lesson from the Imus case, and refrained from saying what she did. About 15 years ago, the late actor Marlon Brando used the K word, when referring to Jews. The JDL picketed his home, and Brando was forced to issue an apology.

Back when Dr. Laura was still a practicing Jew, I remember listening to her program when a woman called in whose son was about to be confirmed in a Christian Church. The problem is, the woman was Jewish and she was now coming to grips with the fact that her halachically Jewish son was being raised as a Christian as she had agreed when she had married her Christian husband, and that she wanted somehow to have her son have a bar mitzvah. This of course is the kind of situation that requires great sensitivity and has challenged the best Orthodox rabbi. But Dr. Laura instead read the caller the riot act, blasting her for even thinking of not wanting to keep the agreement she had made with her husband to raise her Jewish child as a Christian. I was stunned that a self-identified Orthodox Jew would say such a thing! It came as no surprise that not long after that Dr. Laura announced that she would no longer observe Jewish rituals.

Sorry to say, but she seems like a confused product of an intermarriage. Her father was Jewish, then she converted, though herself married to a goy, then she renounced her “Judaism”.

I was always upset that although she claimed to be espousing Jewish moral values, she did this while abusing and making mincemeat out of her callers. The first and foremost Jewish value is menschlachkeit–kindness.

She dabbled in Judaism for a while and then quit when it became too “inconvenient.” The “advice” that she gave to callers was absolutely disgusting. What an embarrassment that this vicious and evil creature was ever associated with Jews.

Personal grievances with Dr Laura aside, she is absolutely right about this issue.
We need to stop tolerating double standards with regard to race.

I actually registered after reading some of the comments on this post.
#3 – That’s blatantly not the case here. First of all, imagine if you were the caller, complaining about someone being insensitive to anti-Semitism (granted, the caller was talking about her husband so it’s not *too* parallel), and then hit with anti-Semitic slurs on a live radio show. That hurts, no matter who you are. And that is not victimhood. That’s legitimate offense. “Like to play victim and use it against you”? In light of black history and current race relations (if you think we live in a post-racial society, let’s go try and catch a taxi together in Midtown)? A statement like that is naive at best, bigoted at worst.

the toireh says: that we should not bring up his/her past and remind her what she was in a not a nice way, perhaps if where nicer to her, she would have been still Jewish.
i regret the chilul hashem involved, in this or any other case.

Dr. Laura is still Jewish, just non-observant. We should all hope for her return to the Torah way of life.
