London - Investigation of Girl that Died from Painkillers She Mistook for Jelly Beans |
|
London - A five-year-old girl died of a drug overdose after mistaking painkillers for jelly beans, an inquest heard this week.
Hanna Collins was believed to have climbed onto a chair to reach what she thought were sweets in a cupboard where her father kept his medication.
Hanna would have been unable to read the “keep out” sign on the packet of Tramadol, Hertfordshire coroners were told.
Her father Andrew was looking after Hanna, her twin sister Lucy, and Amy, on the night of March 18 while their mother Claudia went swimming.
Andrew Collins broke down as he told the inquest that he had used Tramadol for six months but thought he had disposed of the tablets.
Several hours after taking the tablets, while sleeping in her parents’ bed, Hanna started foaming at the mouth, her mother Claudia told the inquest.
“We had a power cut that night so I ran to get my mobile phone to call an ambulance. Andrew was wiping her mouth with tissues and was doing what the paramedics were telling him to do over the phone.” An ambulance took Hanna to Barnet General but she was pronounced dead two hours later.
Pathologist Dr Marian Malone confirmed the little girl had died from an overdose of Tramadol. Assistant deputy coroner Dr Frances Cranfield recorded a verdict of accidental death saying: “This was a tragic accident.”
Rabbi Alan Plancey, who officiated at the funeral at Bushey Cemetery, said after the inquest: “It’s an absolute tragedy. It was an accident and we have to help the family move forward, to give them all the support they need rather than dwelling in the past. They have been a very strong family and have been helped by their parents to pull through. We hope they will see much nachas and pleasure from their other children.”

These tablets look nothing like jelly beans but what would a little girl know. Its a tragic reminder of the importance of using childproof caps which are a pain but will save lives.

A very unfortunate situation. What can you do in the face of a determined child who climbs to find candy?
When I was a young lad, I found what I thought was an M&M on the floor of my grandmother's house. I started chewing on it and spat it out because it was bitter. Thankfully, I learned a lesson that day.

A horrific tragedy.
Something to be aware of:
I recently turned on the toaster oven and a childproof bottle of adult vitamins was near it. Apparently the heat melted the cover of the vitamins, and it is no longer childproof. I discovered this when I watched my 7 year old open the bottle effortlessly.

In the last few weeks a number of children have died due to tragic accidents. We have all read the stories on the various Jewish sites. These were all pure neshamos. Let us all make an effort to better ourselves. Choose one area and concentrate on imroving yourself. May Hashem have Rachmones on all of Klal Yisroel and may he bring our long Golus to an end. May everyone be inscribed for a good, gebenched year.

Now why would a pharmaceutical company market such potent medication in the shape, form and color of jelly beans?! I think it's totally absurd and irresponsible.

Even worse than jelly bean medicine is LEGO CANDY! The company that makes it, the rabbanim that give a hechsher on it, and any parent that lets it in the house, should be locked up. Teach a kid to eat little things that look like lego? Have you lost your minds? Whose insane idea was this?
