Borough Park, NY – Four members of an Orthodox Jewish volunteer patrol in Brooklyn were shot Thursday night after they followed and confronted a man in a vehicle who had been acting suspiciously, the police and witnesses said.

The men, members of the Shomrim Patrol, a volunteer security force, were shot about 8 p.m. near 49th Street and 10th Avenue in Borough Park, the police said. None of their wounds were considered life-threatening.

The man in the car was apprehended. He was not immediately identified, and it was unclear what charges he would face.

Members of the security patrol said the man they confronted had previously been reported sitting in his car and fondling himself while leering at groups of young girls.

They said they had chased and tried to apprehend him once before, and had made a plan to confront him.

On Thursday night, they said, they spotted the man driving up 46th Street in a silver Hyundai after residents called their hot line. Members of the patrol began following him in an unmarked car, and contacted Shomrim members in other vehicles to help box him in, said Sam Follman, a coordinator for the group.

“He noticed we were behind him, and he was scared,” Mr. Follman said. “He’s a known perp to us.”

He added, “This time we saw him.”

As the man drove along 46th street between Ninth and 10th Avenues, he had to stop behind a double-parked car on a one-way street.

“When he saw he was blocked, he got out and started running,” Mr. Follman said. After a brief chase, members of the patrol converged on him from several directions, tackled him and forced him to the ground. The man then pulled a .22-caliber gun and started firing, Mr. Follman said.

“Probably he got off five, six shots,” he said. “While he was on the floor, he kept shooting.”

According to the police, four members of the group were hit. They were taken to Lutheran Medical Center. Mr. Follman identified the injured men as Abe Kaztow, a baker, who was hit in the hand; Motty Brauner, a dry cleaner, who was hit in the neck; Joel Klein, an insurance salesman, who was shot in the abdomen; and Motty Pearl, also a baker, who was hit in the hand.

Reports say the suspect has been shot as well. Who shot the suspect if Shomrim don’t carry guns? Were the Shomrim with NYPD when he started shooting?

You really are a sick yid for the obscenities you throw around at another yid who also happens to be NYC’s mayor. The violent crime statistics for NYC and Brooklyn in general, and the 62nd and 66th precincts which cover most of the heimeshe areas of BP show crime is down under Bloomberg. He is one of the best mayors in the history of NYC. Obviously any violent incident is one too many but stop whining; BP is safer than ever even though you are too myopic to see the reality supported by the statistics.

Shomrim don’t need guns; we have a police department for a reason. Shomrim may benefit from bullet proof vests so the community should donate vests for them if they don’t have issued vests. It is very difficult to aim a gun, chose small targets like the neck or hands and then shoot in a very fast paced, high stressed situation. Most likely the reason they were shot in these areas is because they leaped into his vehicle to control him when he displayed a gun. These shots must have been placed at close contact range, which begs to question why Shomrim were stopping a suspicious vehicle and putting themselves at high risk instead of following him and calling for NYPD like typical community patrols do? There is a reason why only cops are allowed to stop vehicles who are trained to approach with proper tactics and who also have guns.

we’ve got to hand to hand it to the shomrim, They have some serious brass to do the things that they do. It makes me proud to be a jew knowing there are people out there in our community who have this kind of courage in the face of danger.

This article does seem a bit vague with what went on though.

Id like to know the details. Why did they think the car was suspicious? How did they approach him at the red light? What led to the final confrontation? How did they apprehend him?

A suggestion to the shomrim, Cary pepper spray and a stun gun if you don’t already.

When will you Brooklyn people start to realize that Brooklyn is a filthy sewer. Its time to move to Monsey (or Lakewood,Five Towns anywhere else) and bring up your children in a beautiful yiddishe atmosphere. No we dont have the “action” of the jungle but is that the way to bring up yiddishe children?? Every one is so agressive, pushy, conitually watching over your sholder, waiting in traffic or for traffic lights half of yur life…yes you have to be a bit tougher a bit more agressive to make it there, but then you’ve just gained your Itallian neighbors street midos, is that the way to bring up children. Passing other yidden on shabbos and ignoring them not even saying a gut shabbos??? Spend some extended time out of the sewer and one day you;ll wake up.

the perp was exposing himself to children on another block and the mothers who noticed it called shomrim and police. he sped off when he realized that the mothers were calling to their children from the window to run home because the man in that car was dangerous.
Please do not allow children of any age to play outside without adult supervision. You never know who is lurking!

Unbelievable!!!!!! As sources say, this suspect was already arrested several times for criminal acts – robbery & even a shooting! So why the hell was he free? Is this justice? & if the answer is that there was not enough evidence, is that an excuse? & if u don’t find 0 proper evidence now will he be freed again? Come on?!….

This same vehicle and person was observed on two occasions last week, and the Police department refused to even make a police report even though Shomrim had the plate of the vehicle.

He was exposing himself in front of children. The Shomrim had no choice but to stop him this time, as he is a repeat offender and police refuse to do their job.

And that is why crime is down in NY!! Because they refuse to report it.

I vaguely recall the Old Testament strongly hinting that the home of the Jewish people is Israel. Not Boro Park, not Monsey, and not Lakewood. Pick it up one day and try reading it. If you can’t figure it out in spite of your expensive yeshiva education, look on the left side, there’s often a translation.

Years ago the shomrim used to frisk all the preps they caught. Why dont they do it now? They could’ve avoided being shot.

Why aren’t Jews in America armed? You have the right to buys guns…Why dont you?

Jews seem to be in the forefront of every two bit lefty foolish outfit promoting something or other.

Get yourself armed and then the anti-semites will know full well, they are playing with danger.

Why do you think the Blacks in america are respected…because they are armed dangerous and willing to use force.

I’m the very last to defend such a person, but the facts are as follows:
A person may or may not have been involved in previous acts. Even if a criminal was convicted and served time, no police officer has the right to stop him and question him without probable cause or witnessing him in the commision of some offense, be it as minor as a traffic infraction. Now place yourself in the position of the alleged perp. He’s being followed by persons unknown, surely they didn’t identify themselves. “SHOMRIM! FREEZE! The man’s feels threatened and after he’s suddenly blocked in by cars, he flees for his life. These strangers attack him and he’s perfectly justified defending himself. The one catch is he has an illegal weapon. The situation is basically identical to Bernard Goetz. Although he was justified in defending himself, he served time for illegal weapon possession, and then he was sued civilly for injuring the people who tried to rob him.) Unless this guy was fleeing from the scene of a crime, he’ll walk on all charges except gun possession and the shomrim may be charged with stalking, menacing, assault, and battery.

Shomrim do a great job, but the courts are bound to review their actions according to the law. I hope they are sufficiently educated to protect themselves against both civil and criminal actions. Just because a guy may be of the darker persuasion, is no reason to stop him in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood.
On the other hand, I was extremely disturbed to hear the vehicle had Michigan plates. Dearborn and Detroit are home to the two largest Arab/Moslem communities in the US, Orlando might be next. Before hearing that he was a perv my main concerns were much more serious and not necessarily frivolous. stay tuned.

    great job

    some comments

“This same vehicle and person was observed …and the Police .. refused to even make a police report …..Shomrim had the plate of the vehicle.”

unless they actually saw a crime, the police really cannot do anything they are hinderred by more regulation than a community security group
“put a police officer and a shomrim side by side, you can’t compare it, ….we are stronger and more united thanks to shomrim members.”

I needed a good laugh lets see how touch the shomrin are when the perb in know to carry a gun first thing they do is call the police.
One can complement one group without diminishing the other group, you cannot do that sadly. The police face danger everyday, let the shomrim try to raid a drug den or drug dealers in a bad neighborhood.

I guess the perv was a goy, otherwise they would of called a rov what to do, then they convene a beis den and then they would say we cannot do anything since he is a yid. What about his family, parnoso? send him for physiological care but does not apply to a goy, shamefullVery bigoted , racist and hypercritical. And dangerous to your childre
