Israeli prison officials said Asher Weisgan, 41, used his Tefillin, leather straps that religious Jewish men don each day in prayer, to hang himself in his cell at the central Ayalon Prison.
"He left his prayer book open on the Kaddish page," Prisons Service spokeswoman Orit Steltzer said.

Just because you are all paranoid does not mean there is no one out there trying to get you.

How’s that for something to worry about?

Does the term: “extra-judicial execution” come to mind?

Sounds like a murder rather than a suicide.

Killing yourself with your tefillin? Come on!

What do you expect from a terrorist. He expected he will be treated as an hero, but landed in a dungeon for life. Where normal people get depressed.

Depression is very painful. In his mind the only choices he had was live in terrible pain day after day with no end in sight, or use the tfilin as medicine…

    Anon 11:36,
Are you saying that if somone does something terrible you have to keep your ‘head in the sand’? Did the Yemenite k’hilla have that choice? The Morrocan jews? Any organized ‘Aliya’ before Nefesh B’nefesh in mid ’90’s. People like you who want to believe that everyone is nice and dandy that allows these things to go on. Every Aliyah group that came into the land had to deal with the freiyer mashchisim. These dregs want nothing better then to ‘rip’ 3000 years of heritage from every oleh. These same people will stop at nothing to further their agenda.
To suggest that this suicide was helped allong is not a far cry from their normal practices. That said these same people can exibit tremndous chesed when they want to, after all they are yidden.

Let me explain my earlier radical suggestion.
    1) This person was a mental case. The court had to adress this issue as his defense team argued that he suffered from a mental disorder.
    2) He should have been on a suicide watch. In fact I thought that he was on a suicide watch. With this information how can you allow someone to put on tefillin unattended. The straps can be used to commit suicide. In any normal prison the very first thing they confiscate is your belt for this very reason.

To your point about not talking bad about another yid if this is not the place to analyze and discuss issues then why come at all?

SHAME ON BOTH OF YOU . It is a big nebuch that one of ours did what he did, unfortunitly he was not with all his kailim . If you dont have anything nice to say dont say it.
this forum is not an avenue to talk bad about another yid. We have enough people out there that want to finish us off.
The frier yidden are trying to do the job, and you dont have to help them.

I dont believe the story. He was probably wacked by some shin bet faction. Come on!?? Hang your self using your tefilin? What next will someone try to commit suicide using a sefer-torah (sufficate by wrapping yourself in it)? Come on who do the israeli jail service think we are? That Gullable? No way! This was a ‘hit’ and thats that!
I do want to point out that what this guy did to land in jail was terribly wrong!
