Philadelphia, PA - The Philadelphia Health Department is warning about an outbreak of mumps at a school in Overbrook.

19 cases of mumps have been reported at Talmudical Yeshiva of Philadelphia.

The Jewish day school is located on Drexel Road off City Avenue.

The ill students had recently visited an out-of-state school where there was also a mumps outbreak.

The health department is working to contain the virus and has identified those who were exposed.

Officials say there is no risk to the general public as of now.

There were similiar epidemics of mumps in yeshivos in Monsey and Brooklyn over the past year or two; is there some type of hygiene issue that these schools need to focus on?? It is highly contagious and can be very dangerous to some yinglach

You did yours by arranging immunizations for your kids; it is still not a guarantee as immunity does not take place in all cases. Most of those affected were up to date.

Let me also stress this fact before the vaccine argument breaks out again. The previous epidemic in Yeshiva communities affected many that were up to date with immunizations, there was no evidence at any point blaming lack of vaccinations.

All I know is that when I go to a simcha at a hall located with a yeshiva, there is usually not hot water or soap in the bathroom.

Immunizations must be reinforced after 10 years. Most parents are very diligent about getting immunizations for their children when they are infants and toddlers, but very few bother to follow up when these children become teenagers. Public high schools insist on immunizations for all teenage students.

Vaccines are no guarantee. My daughter developed mumps in spite of her vaccinations.

Some people say the vaccines cause autism.

Some people say that they were abducted by aliens. Both claims are equally nonsense.

and some people claim they're from the gov't and are here to help.

The autism claim is pure garbage. And Ariana and RFK jr. should be publicly pilloried for their part in this scare mongering.

CBDDS -How misinformed you are! While it's true that almost everyone who has gotten the mumps from this Frum epidemic have been vaccinated, the first patient in the Satmar camp wasn't. So you see the damage that has been caused by people who refuse to vaccinate their kids! Look how many thousands of frum Jews have gotten sick (some severly) because of some selfish parents who were scared of the vaccine maybe because of their ridiculous belief that vaccines cause autism or something else. Immunity provided by the mumps vaccine was never meant to be foolproof. Together with herd immunity -it protects everyone. Once someone breaks that herd immunity, it's very easy for others to pick it up. That's how this FRUM epidemic started.

As far as I know that's false. Just the vaccine never gives 100% immunity against mumps, nor was it ever supposed to. See my other post.

NO vaccine gives 100% immunity. To think like that clearly shows the posted has no idea how the immunizations works.

A number of philly talmidim who had the mumps or were thought to have the mumps are children of doctors who know a bit more than posters 1, 6, and 7.

It is amazing that you absolutely know the original source of the epidemic. It was said to have started with a boy from the UK, but perhaps it was someone else, perhaps he caught it from another. The farce is that, according to the NYC Dep't of Health, 99% of those affected had been vaccinated according to the protocol. The person really misinformed might be you and the others that can not accept that the vaccine is not as effective as you were led to believe. Herd immunity does not apply when the failure rate is so great.
The concern of some parents that there is a connection between vaccines and autism is not pure rubbish, I would say that I believe it is neither proven nor refuted. The studies are not well designed.

Actually the "college" in the UK was already caught with their pants down on this one. Seems the brits are always lying about things.

What does the relative efficacy of vaccine have to do with whether or not vaccines cause autism. Everyone know that no vaccine is 100% effective and that patients can still present with mumps even after vaccination.

There have been study after study showing no link between vaccination and autism and no rational person can maintain that there is a link. Any such person, layman or doctor, who says that there is a link is clearly speaking nonsense.

TRUTH be told!
If you live in NY or any other major city in the world every bug is around. There are about 100 International flight that land at JFK daily, most directly or connecting with third world Cities. Similar odds affect most major Cities. The passengers mingle in the Imigration hall and then spread throughout the City. This is the decade of the bedbug, after all. You simply can not know the source nor how to prevent epidemics (short of killing us all as dead people do not mingle).
Improved hygiene habits in our community would b better than the absurd ranting that you seem to enjoy.

My son B"H learns in Philly and got the mumps. A 9th grader had brought it from Telshe Cleveland after Sukkos. My son has gotten every immunization but he got the mumps anyway. The Yeshiva is doing a great job keeping the outbreak to a minimum and my son was back in Yeshiva (per our Doctors instructions) 3 days later and Shteiging away.

Yea, it started from a boy from the UK, who wasn't vaccinated and spread it to the Satmar camp. If the vaccine didn't work, why hasn't the whole country come down with mumps? The answer is because the vaccine is effective when you have minor exposure, not when you have major exposure from someone who got a strong case because he wasn't vaccinated. Now you know what I mean by herd immunity. Are you one of those who believe there is a connection between autism and vaccines and don't vaccinate your kids? You certainly look that way! Because you keep trying to find other reasons for this epidemic than the original patient whom wasn't vaccinated!

I am not surre of your points,
1, No epidemic hits 100% of the population, you are not proving anything by noting that the whole country did not get sick.
2, I am stating that having the vaccine according to protocol does not always produce immunity, read the comments from parents above for proof.
3, The concept of herd immunity means very little if one case fromo verseas spread so much disease.
4, I wonder whether it's spreading in dorm or camp settings requires a rethink o appropriate hygiene practices within our community, perhaps we should institute something like staying out of Bais Medrash while really sick.
5, Rethink your minor exposure theory, the question is; is there an immune response or not.
6, My kids have had their vaccines.
