I can tell you from personal experience, that the small single engine planes are not very safe, structurally speaking. They disintegrate on impact; there are no air bags, as there are in automobiles, and the safety belt/shoulder harness does not afford much protection, once the plane breaks apart, or catches on fire. In addition, those planes don't have the collision avoidance system, which the commercial airliners are mandated to have. For some reason, the public seems to tolerate the numerous crashes and deaths, which occur annually in single engine planes. The public would never tolerate such an accident crash rate, pertaining to commercial airliners.
