The stark images reveal North America’s iconic – and most powerful – waterfall to be almost as dry as a desert.
In June 1969, U.S. engineers diverted the flow of the Niagara River away from the American side of the falls for several months.

I have always had a vague childhood memory of this, but was often told I must be mistaken. Vindicated!!
It is obvious from the way the American side is split that it is man made and that is why the erosion has slowed down. They had to divert the falls to create a space for people to watch.
