Officials urged anyone who did not have to drive to stay off roads in the region, where high winds pushed snow into deep drifts across streets, railroads and runways.

In Monmouth County, N.J., state troopers carried water and food to diabetics marooned on two passenger buses carrying about 50 people on the Garden State Parkway, where stranded cars cluttering ramps stymied snow plows and ambulances, state police spokesman Steve Jones told NBC’s “Today” show. One bus was freed by 7 a.m. and the other was expected to be out soon, he said. Passengers reported no major medical problems.

The good news is that within the past 2-3 hours, the police have started towing away those cars blocking major streets so the ploughs can get through. The bad news is that they are not keeping any records of where the towed cars are being dropped off and if they are taken to one of the impoundment lots in willy or flatbush, there is a $250 fee just to claim your car.

A police spokesperson said that any car towed will be a minumum of 250.00 What people are doing is quite stupid and people are literally dying because Fire Department,EMS and Hatzolah crews are getting stuck behind vehicles parked in middle of nowhere.

If you get stuck stay with your vehicle even if you have to sit there for 6 hours. It’s irresponsible for anyone to just leave their car in middle of a road or major intersection.

(You shouldn’t have been driving altogether and you would not have got stuck)

Why are these ehrliche yidden walking (to and from shul?) in the middle of the street rather than on the sidewalks. In these conditions, cars and trucks are skidding all over the street and could easily run into them. If you can’t walk on the sidewalk, STAY HOME…its not so important to daven with a minyan in these conditions.

What could possibly be so important that some of these morons have to get on the road in these conditions?

I have one question… why are there any cars out trying to go? Are they all so “important” that they have to try to travel from 13th avenue to 15th avenue? is it more of trying to show off that “their” car can dive in this weather or that their driving talents are so incredible that “they” WILL be able to make without getting stuck???

    Seichel please!!!…

    I for one don’t understand….

Emergency request from sanitation hq: If you see a sanitation truck with a plow on the street please call 911, it’s for sure stolen. We didn’t send out any trucks now……….

“The City is working to dig out from the storm. Major roadways will be plowed and salted first, then crews will address local streets. If you see a street that needs plowing or salt please report it to 311”

A lot of the cars are from people who got stuck last night. When they left their houses to go to a Chasana or Simcha it was not so bad but then they could not get home. My neighbor got stuck at 1:30 AM and 911 told her to just leave her car in the middle of the street.

The city is guilty of gross mismanagement — all the sanitation trucks have disappeared and they are in cheirem. NOT ONE SANITATION TRUCK IN THE WHOLE OF BROOKLYN AND I HEAR ITS THE SAME IN QUEENS.

All the trucks must be in Manhattan!

People are abandonimg the cars because the streets have not been cleaned. Not the other way around.

In Chicago – a city that has the most precise snow removal plans in place for any degree of storm – if a car gets stuck in middle of the street – 10 people show up to push the car with their body weight to get it to the side of the road. No one ever leaves a car IN MIDDLE of a street. It may not be the best parking job on the side of the street, but it is always pushed over enough to make way for any vehicle that needs to come down that street. New Yorkers have to learn to work together if they want to claim a city that knows how to operate in these conditions.

Among other things, ‘staff cutbacks’ means fewer people to plow the streets. ‘Cutbacks in capital budget’ means fewer trucks to plow. People were OK with this if it meant saving a few dollars in taxes. If you want service you should be prepared to pay for it.
