Maj. Itamar Ashkenazi, the deputy battalion commander for the area, said the man came out of an olive grove riding a donkey, carrying an assault rifle and chanting “God is great.” The soldiers called on him to stop and fired warning shots in the air. When the Palestinian began firing his weapon, the soldiers shot him dead, Ashkenazi said.
He said no soldiers were hurt in the exchange of fire near the West Bank city of Jenin.
Palestinian security officials identified the man as Sami Samoudi, 23. It was unclear if he had links to militants, and no militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Relatives said Samoudi likely sought to avenge the death of a relative who was killed at a checkpoint in the Jordan Valley two weeks ago while trying to attack soldiers with a pipe bomb.
He got what he deserved.
