Washington, DC - Hungary's ambassador to Washington Andras Simonyi has sought to calm fears expressed by a congressman over anti-Semitism in the central European country.

Simonyi held a meeting with Edolphus Towns (Dem), who had sent a letter to Hungary's embassy expressing his deep dismay over reports of anti-Semitism.

"Hungarians are not anti-Semitic and every good-intentioned person in Hungary would be outraged by any instance of anti-Semitism," Simonyi, told the congressman.

The representative for the 10th congressional district of New York based in Brooklyn, had quoted Peter Feldmajer, head of the Hungarian Jewish Association, who said, "Jews do not feel particularly safe now" in the capital, and referred to comments made by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany in a recent interview in The Time newspaper of London.

After the meeting, Simonyi said that he had calmed the congressman's fears and assured him that Jews in Hungary are not living in any danger and lead an active and vibrant existence. He added that it was clear that there was a loud but tiny minority of anti -Semites but Hungarians were not generally anti-Semitic. [MTI]
