The proposal made Tuesday cites a study that shows bacteria that could lead to serious infection can be carried on ties and other loose-fitting clothing.

The Independent Democratic Conference in the state Senate is calling for the legislation to redress what they consider a fashion emergency.

Republicans have a 32-30 advantage over Democrats in the chamber, but the independent caucus has at times sided with the GOP.

The independent Democrats are Sens. Jeffrey Klein of the Bronx, Diane Savino of Staten Island, David Valesky of central New York, and David Carlucci of Orange and Rockland counties.

Most doctors don’t wear ties while doing rounds. The few tht do should be able to decide just as they do about any other patient safety issues.

This is ancient news – at least on *this* side of the pond.

Britain’s hospital doctors have been banned from wearing ties for several years – especially OB/GYN specialisats.

This is nonsense! Our family Physician always wore a bowtie, and he treated us for many years, even making house calls. Who thinks of such bubba meises?

The necktie is a stupid, worthless article of clothing! The original neckties from the 1700’s were actually large napkins that men wore around their necks to wipe their mouth and nose with.

You all claim that this is a stupid law. I don’t think that you would say this if someone you knew C”V got sick because of this. Better safe than sorry. Any law to help keep people from getting sick is a good law.

Unless it’s the law the doctors will keep wearing them since other businessmen do wear them. Even if it know that ties are the #1 place on clothing microorganism hide and thrive (besides the bottom of your shoes)

The necktie doesn’t touch the patient. Even if it was teeming with microorganisms, how would it be a method of transmission? Also, how does it rank compared to other public health problems? Surely, a doorknob is much more likely to transmit disease. Wouldn’t it make more sense to require exclusively automatic doors in the healthcare setting? Neckties rank up there with transfats as a real health issue but which assumes a level of public importance far outweighing its actual health effects.
