(AP Photo/Nick Gonzalez)Seattle, WA - A Seattle police spokesman says the department is embarrassed after officers left a police rifle unattended on a patrol car outside a busy downtown area.
Spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb says the department has launched an investigation.
Whitcomb says two people spotted the rifle on the parked car. One flagged down bicycle officers to alert them. The other followed the cruiser as it drove through downtown Seattle and tracked down the driver after the car parked.
The alternative weekly The Stranger first reported the incident, posting a picture that shows the rifle sitting on top of the trunk.
Whitcomb says such rifles are assigned only to officers who have additional training. They’re usually kept in the trunk or between the driver and passenger seats.

The SPD only issues AR-15s, not M-16s or M-4s. They're tricked out and glitzy, but they're still just ARs.
As far as it goes, so what if it's military issue? The .223 is a small, underpowered cartridge. The Army recommends three or four shots minimum to stop a human being with it. Any hunting rifle, let alone a shotgun, is much deadlier.
But yeah, this just goes to prove that only cops should be trusted with guns. After all, they are highly trained and "held to a higher standard" than mere civilians.

Nope. Depending on whether it's the M4 or M4A1 it has semiautomatic, three-round burst and (M4A1) fully automatic. There is no such thing as "manual fire".
The AR-15 is semi-automatic only. When they started going to the AR an old cop disgustedly said "Dispatch, I need an ambulance on First and Main, Second and Main, Third and Main..."
