Brooklyn, NY - Grassroots Organization Blasts Weprin For Saying He Voted For Gay Marriage As An Orthodox Jew |
|
Brooklyn, NY - Democratic party leaders announced their choice of Assemblyman David Weprin in the special election for the congressional seat vacated by disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner, prompting an outcry from an Orthodox Jewish voters group based in Queens.
Mr. Weprin voted in favor of the law which recently made New York the sixth and the most populous state to legally recognize same-sex marriages. Mr. Weprin, who publicly identifies himself as an Orthodox Jew, also said that he was proud of his vote on the issue.
The Community Guardians Group (CGG), an Orthodox-Jewish led grass-roots advocacy group, said it regarded Mr. Weprin’s support of same-sex marriage as a betrayal of not only the Jewish people, but of all New Yorkers. The Torah that was given to the Jewish people also incorporates the laws binding on all humanity. These Seven Laws of Noah explain how G-d Almighty has obligated people of all nations to be fruitful and multiply, and to refrain from same-sex relationships.
“New York has no official religion,” said Dovid Z. Schwartz, CGG’s Director. “But it’s a vicious lie to pretend that it’s somehow un-American to use moral values that are grounded in Torah to guide the decisions of state. The success of this nation comes only from securing the blessings of G-d Almighty, which depends on the fidelity of our deeds to His Torah.”
The Community Guardians Group is a grass-roots organization dedicated to advancing Torah values in the public forum. Online: www.zehjournal.com

According to Rambam, the Noachide Laws (Sheva Mitvot Benei No'ach): If a Ben No'ach steals even less than a Perutah, he is executed. And he gets no warning. Should we teach this to a Ben No'ach when a Jew who steals more than a Perutah is just fined?

David Weprin happens to be a good choice by the party to win the seat. I used to like him although i never thought he is the sharpest tool in the shed, but being a so called frum Jew he did the unthinkable. After Assemblyman Hikind made his statement (which I believe took 8 minutes) opposing the GM bill. Not only did Weprin vote for the GM bill but he actually stood up and made a statement to the effect that "as an orthodox Jew and his children attending orthodox schools I support and will vote yes for this bill" The speaker voted yes but did not make any statements. As the speaker he may have had to vote yes and as I understand he doesn't do anything controversial without discussing it with his Rav harav Dovid Feinstein. But For Weprin to vote yes and do it very loud and proud is really disgusting. i don't live in that district but if I would I would loudly and proudly with my head held high vote for his opposition...we don't need a so called orthodox Jew that so blatantly spits in the face of our values.

Sick, he is voting for something that is demented and sick according to Gd. There's a reason we are a light unto the nations, and that we can vote against immorality!

Favish,
With all due respect, what does this have to do with modern orthodox?
First off this guy claims to be orthodox. Who says he is? Do a google search on this guy. He never received a yeshiva education, nor is he affiliated with any frum organizations. He is affiliated with non-frum and liberal organizations only. Are we going to draw attention to another nut who claims to represent us? Write a letter to him and condemn him, then gineek shoin!
Secondly, as a "chareidi

Obviously, the Noachide laws are irrelevant to political decisions and voting in contemporary legislative bodies in galus outside of EY.....goyim are free to do what they wish even if yidden are bound to follow daas torah. With all the issues in our own kehillah (Madoff, SMR, Wiener, Dwek, etc.) we have no business lecturing the goyim about morality.

It doesn't matter what kind of label a Jew gives himself. If he violates the Torah, it's a sin. The problem is that the rest of the world will think that if Weprin, an "Orthodox" Jew, voted for same-gender marriage, then it must be ok. He and all other "Orthodox" Jews who C"V endorse or vote for same-gender marriage have publicly desecrated Hashem's name.

Whatever "Peter" said or believes has no bearing on the fact that your comment about his name is abhorrent. We did not give ourselves our names, our parents did. For a long time some countries in Europe demanded that children be named according to an approved list and Hebrew names were not on those lists. There are many erlich yidden who have secular names and you have no business mocking them.

You judge the entire MO community because of the words of one man. Should we then judge everyone that lives in Kiryas Joel as potential arsonists and murderers? There are enough child molesters in the frum community for the entire world to think that we yidden are a nation of pedophiles, and according to your view of the world they'd be right. Do us all a favor favish and keep some of your more foolish opinions to yourself.

Is it true that Sheldon Silver discusses his votes with R. Dovid Feinstein? I simply can't believe this is true with respect to the new "marriage" law.
Are we really to believe that such a gadol approved a vote for this monstrosity?
Also, to those who comment that Weprin was simply voting the will of his constituents, this is a serious misunderstanding of the role of an elected official. A representative is not a robot, there is an ongoing give-and-take between them and those they represent.
And in any event there was substantial, perhaps a majority, opinion among his constituents against this abomination.
Both Weprin and Silver should never receive an aliyah or any honors from frum shuls of organizations in the future. Anyone who honors either of them is complicit in this aveirah.

Rav Feinstein's pesak is private for the speaker and not for anybody else. The speaker's vote is not the deciding vote. Again, the speaker voted quietly while Weprin unfortunately stood up and spoke "with pride" while repeating that he's an orthodox Jew..He shoild be ashamed of himself. On the other hand Speaker Silver has gone out of his way for our (his) communities and would not be able to do that if he wasn't the speaker.
