Manhattan, NY - A proposal to ban cars from Central Park’s loop drives for the summer has the support of the New York City Council and five community boards. But there has been no endorsement for the idea from Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration.
The park drives are open to cars only during certain hours on weekdays — at precisely the time pedestrians and joggers say they use them for recreation.
According to The New York Times, city Transportation Department spokesman Seth Solomonow said no changes are planned at this time.
Taxi drivers oppose the ban, as do some area residents who say it would divert more traffic to their streets.
The park’s crosstown transverse roads would not be affected by the proposal.
