“My sons, Y and B, were on Vos Iz Neias at 1 AM. They watched the video and felt they had to do something to help find the missing boy. Chasdei Hashem they headed in the right direction and they first noticed the car on East 3rd Street and Cortelyou. They took pictures but figured it was nothing.”

“Then they saw the same car on East 2nd Street. Since the car didn’t pass them on East 3rd , a one way street where they had been parked, they knew the car had been moved illegally. A few moments later they noticed the car had been moved again without driving by the spot where they had parked and they understood that it had been moved illegally again. They saw him in front of his house, looking very nervous. He looked my son in the eye and they drove away.

“They didn’t know what to think of it, but couldn’t imagine they had found him. They drove him but they kept wondering. Why would the car be moved three times, in such a short time, each time illegally? They saw Shomrim on the block and gave them the license plate number.

So, if I understand this correctly, they told Shomrim rather than the police and Shomrim, rather than the police, made the determination that this was not worthy of follow-up. Therefore, nothing was done for quite a long time.

I wonder what would have happened had they — or Shomrim — called the police right away and left it up to the police to decide whether this was worthy of follow-up.

Only reason I’m asking is because perhaps we should learn a lesson to go straight to the police and let the professionals make these kinds of judgment calls.

This story has many, many unanswered questions.
Was the ball dropped somewhere here when the suspect was seen and nothing was done at that point?

lets not get into details of how they found the car or who found the car. Those yeshiva bochrim did what they were supposed to do and we all need to learn that nothing we do is in vain. They were going home feeling like they tried their best, and they certainly did.

Please stop with the reward money. Nobody here searched for the reward. They searched to help. Additionally, based on the turnout of the events, I don’t think anyone will ask for a reward. The askanim that offered the reward should keep their money so they can help with it in the future. These boys, shomrim, Mr. German, Hatzola, NYPD, FBI, etc. all deserve kudos and recognition for a job well done.

I think the dentists records was a slam dunk. once they knew the name they sure found that a car matching the video is registerd to that bastard.

I would hope that whoever intends to collect on this reward should rather forward it to the Kletzky family. How can one expect to get it instead. Their Mitzvah would be ten-fold!!! The kletzky family should be given the money to rebuild their lives, get the necessary counseling and have the ability to relocate to a comfortable home where they can grieve as they need to with more privacy.

They should have called in the acr to 9-1-1 as soon as they saw it, I’m not sure if this story reflects their heroics or their lack of common sense.

I don’t understand what the problem is, the mother said: her boys were on VIN at 1:00 am, and then they left to search, they saw the car once, twice and a third time got suspicious, flaged down a shomer and this Achzer was arrested 3ish, I think that’s quit fast action by these bucherim, shomrim and PD.

Look Kelly thanked Shomrim for providing the license plate number. This provided corroborating evidence for what the receptionist had provided. No doubt it would help with getting a search warrant.

I will not second guess anyone. I’d just like to point out though that, in the future, when there is information to report, it could be reported to *both* 911 and shomrim. It doesnt have to be either/or…

1– Sometimes HKB”H orchestrates events to happen in such a way so that things happen the way He wants them to. We believe that Hashem runs the world, and everything happened the way it was supposed to happen.
2– These boys did exactly what they were supposed to do. They told Shomrim, who followed up with the tip.
3– I don’t believe anything the murderer says. He is trying to make himself the victim. He also didn’t say in his “confession” the part where he tied poor Leiby up. He has cuts on his body. scratches. Doubt he got it from accidentally nicking himself with a knife.

4– We should move forward and stop trying to understand this. We need to feel sad about what happened and work on ourselves. Every single person should accept upon himself one mitzvah to do l’iluey nishmas. Don’t make Leiby’s death senseless. If we grow, then at least something good can come out of the horrible event.

When you all talk of the reward money, you all should consider what police chiefs Kelly and Esposito said. We can all shudder and think that but for the security cameras located at Yehuda Bernstein’s auto leasing place at Dahill-45th-18 (formerly Wheels-to-Lease) this guy would have gotten away with the ‘perfect’ crime, with no evidence whatsoever to point to this butcher.
Bernstein got the security camera system installed through the efforts of Ben Herbst from the Council for Community Preservation and ProTel CCTV.
It is they who should earn the reward and should be donated strictly to help residences and businesses to install security cameras all over for reduced costs.

I am quite sure that the animal murdered the child shortly after taking him and that his appearance at the wedding was hours after he was “finished” the job.

Reward money was to find the child alive.
Reward money if any should be given to Shomrim, or to a scholarship in his name.
