Washington - The House has passed legislation designed to keep the government from defaulting on its debts. The measure also sets a course for reducing the federal deficit in the future.
The Senate, where support is stronger, is expected to take up the bill on Tuesday, the deadline for Congress to act before the government loses its ability to pay all its bills.
The 269-161 vote in the House came after Republican leaders spent the day urging recalcitrant conservatives to support the bill.
The bill would raise the debt ceiling by more than $2 trillion and cut federal spending by a similar amount over the next decade. A special congressional committee would be set up to consider entitlement and tax changes.

Please don't lie to us! They voted to raise the debt ceiling, which is like having your credit limit raised when you don't pay yopur bills, but they DID NOT cut spending!!

August 1 will be marked in my calendar as a tragic day. Those who voted for the bill destroyed America for decades to come.

You are probably correct and he will probably lose his seat like only 2 or 3 sitting speakers before him.

" And who is monitoring the spending????"
America's creditors (including the People's Republic of China) and every other country and each financial institution in each country on the face of the globe.
Th United States of America are now fiscal pariahs, cheapskates and financial defaulters.

We all pay for our own Health Insurance!! Let them pay for their own!! Multiply approximately $2300 times 535 is a couple of million saved annually!! Let them pay!! When my husband was not working last year we still paid over 1,000 a month for health insurance.

Exactly my thoughts as well! I cannot BELIEVE how the right-wing has managed to sucker people (some even ON programs like Medicare), into siding w\them on fiscal issues.
After this deal was signed, Eric Cantor got up on stage and said, "Well, the most important thing is that there's no tax increases on the rich in this bill..."
Ok, ok...maybe he didn't say that part about "on the rich" (lol), but he might as well have!
Since the Reagan Administration, they have consistently deceived people into thinking that if we just pay these greedy corporate sharks even MORE MONEY... some of it will somehow magically "trickle down" to the rest of us "bottom feeders".
The debt ceiling limit HAD to be raised to make sure we could still pay for debts that we had ALREADY racked up under the LAST Administration thank you very much.
Racking up debt like that, and then turning around and saying "we're not going to pay on it anymore!" is as irresponsible as people eating a gigantic meal at a fancy resteraunt... and then running out on the bill! Only in THIS case...times a million!
The Republicans have a LOT of chutzpah to talk about "tax & spend" Democrats after what THEY did to this country.
