Washington - Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to the House for the first time since she was shot last January, making a dramatic entrance Monday night during a crucial debt vote and drawing loud applause and cheers from surprised colleagues.

As lawmakers stood on the floor, staring up at the vote board, Giffords slowly made her way through an entrance on the Democratic side of the chamber. Applause built and rolled like a wave through the House as lawmakers realized that their colleague had returned.

Shortly after her appearance, a tweet appeared on Giffords’ Twitter account: “The Capitol looks beautiful and I am honored to be at work tonight.”

On Jan. 8, Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head in the parking lot of a Tucson grocery store while meeting with constituents. Six people were killed and 13 others, including Giffords, were wounded. The man charged in the shooting, Jared Lee Loughner, has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges.

On the House floor, Giffords, wearing glasses, her hair darker and cut short since surgery, hugged and kissed fellow lawmakers. As time ticked off on the vote, Democrats and Republicans made their way toward her.

She cast her first vote — for the debt-limit bill — and left the Capitol.

“It means so much to our country ... to witness the return of our colleague who is the personification of courage, of sincerity, of admiration throughout the country,” Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California told the House.

Giffords has been undergoing outpatient therapy in Houston since her release from the hospital in June.

Loughner was sent to a federal prison facility in Springfield, Mo., after a federal judge concluded he was mentally incompetent to stand trial.

If the Dems had any sechel, they would have moved immediately to amend the debt ceiling bill being debated at the time to include a gun control provision. Unfortunately, under the House rules, such an amendment would have been out of order but I would have loved to see the Second Amendment crowd vote against it.

Gun control only increases the number of gun-related crimes out there. Read the actual statistics, not some partisan interpretation nonsense. I read it and was shocked- had to change my opinion once I read it. I support the 2A (second amendment)- in every area that they instituted stricter gun control, there was a dramatic increase in gun-related murders and other crimes.
Murderers are going to commit a crime anyways- why should they care about another law they are breaking?

The proof that guns are not the cause of the horrible crime committed (and that it was the killer's sole responsibility)?
If a person were to walk into your house (with all your kids) during the Friday night Shabbos Seuda and drop a gun on the table (fully loaded) would anyone get hurt? NO!!!!!!! It is Shabbos Kodesh. Just tell your kids- mukzeh! and no one will get hurt or even touch it.
Same any other day of the week- teach responsibility, logic, boundaries and common sense and then they will not follow a path of crime.
Personal Responsibility is the key, not governmental "Big Brother".

How do you explain the homicide rate in Texas which has no gun control and the death penalty? There are lies, damn lies and statistics.

If a clearly troubled individual such as in the Gabby Giffords case could not be legally denied a gun, and many states are now seeking to relax the ATF rules on sale to ex child offendors and psychos, there clearly is a problem that needs new federal laws.

Texas has a large population (well over a million)of illegal immigrants with hundreds of thousands coming and going every year. This population has a disproportionately high crime rate, which is evidenced by the startling number of illegal aliens in Texas prisons.

No offense, but I've never heard a more ridiculous argument for why there shouldn't be stricter gun laws, in my life! (lol)

"Murderers are going to commit a crime anyways..."

SO?!?! Does that mean an average citizen should be able to go to a gun show, and walk out- THAT DAY- with little, to no REAL background check- simply because murders out there will murder people anyway?!

Well yes! And why don't we just make it EASIER for them to get weapons to do it?! Why don't we set gun shows up RIGHT next to schools too, so we can have another Columbine incident, or what happened in Norway?!

Come on... let's use common sense on this one!

Guns like AK-47's (for example) are ILLEGAL for a reason! Nobody OUTSIDE OF MILITARY should be using a gun like that! They certainly aren't allowed OR used for shooting animals! They are used to kill people with- everyone knows this.

An average joe off the street should NOT be able to buy crazy, "killing-machine" type guns like military style ones, but if some of the 2nd Amendment proponents had it their way...there would be virtually NO regulation on ANY guns at all!

We live in an insane world...MORE GUNS won't help anything.

Pray about it.

So much, apparently, for tolerance and understanding.

If we, as Jewish contributors to this board, cannot have any understanding of one another's points of view how can we expect tolerance and understanding from the goyim?

And if the gun was not loaded would it make any difference to the situation?

More to the point, what would any one on his/her way to a Shabbos seuda be doing with a gun (loaded or otherwise) in the first place?

"Just tell your kids- mukzeh!"

Absolutely correct: there is no need to carry handguns - not on לא בשבת, בימי חול, או בימי חג ומועד

Columbine and Norway are examples of why we need guns, in both places (school and Norway) there are very strict gun laws for the law abiding citizen . If teachers or councilors had guns there would have been MUCH less murders. You just don't like guns, an I understand that, however it doesn't change the fact that more guns less crime.

There are a few inaccurate statement in your screed.

1. All dealers whether or not they are at a gun show or at a fixed place of business are required to call BATFE Instacheck for every sale. All sales must comply with federal and state laws. In some states, private sales are exempt.

2. It is not illegal, per se, to own an AK-47 (a real one with selective fire). What is required is a federal class III firearms license and compliance with state law in such states where such posession is legal (like Massachusetts).

3. It is not uncommon for civilian versions of some military rifles (like the AR family of dreaded "black rifles") to be used for hunting and other recreational activities such as competition (in my case, internationally sanctioned).

4. As was pointed out by another poster, the Columbine and Norwegian incidents were exacerbated by the lack of armed civilians in the area. In the U.S. and in Israel, several attempted massacres have thwarted by armed citizens. I recall on incident in Israel where an Arab terrorist bent on shooting up a Supersol had his ticket cancelled by a 60 year old bubbie with a 9mm.
