New York – After Outrage, Rabbi Schneier Cancels Black Jewish Forum On Crown Heights Riots

New York – Coming under pressure from the Jewish community, Rabbi Marc Schneier has just released the below statement informing that the event “The State of Black-Jewish Relations: Twenty Years After Crown Heights”, that was to be held this coming Sunday at the The Hampton Synagogue has been canceled.

This afternoon, I received a letter from Rev. Al Sharpton informing me that, in deference to the request of the Rosenbaum family, he will not be participating in Sunday’s scheduled forum on Black-Jewish relations. As this event would now cause more pain and division rather than healing and reconciliation, Rev. Sharpton has asked that it be rescheduled so as not to coincide with the anniversary of Crown Heights.

I regret that this very important discussion will not take place this weekend. Dialogue is especially necessary on matters of profound disagreement, and I will continue to dedicate my time, energy and resources to the strengthening of relations between the African-American and Jewish communities.

Community activist Isaac Abraham, A Rosenbaum family spokesman was relived by the cancellation but said, ‘Rather then using this opportunity to apologize to the Jewish Community on the statements he made, Sharpton chickens out, what a shame” Abraham told VIN News.

Sharpton being a sick excuse for a human being I can understand but this Schneier guy is totally off his rocker its sad that he is a descended of the Alter Rebbe I hope that the so called leaders of the Crown Heights Jewish community cancel their sham of a event that they are planing on hosting at the JCM

Well now wait a minute… I guess I’m a little confused here! (lol)

See, towards the middle of the article, I felt the Reverend was making a *good* point about his attendance causing more hurt than healing. Ok, so he won’t attend, and now everyone is happy…. right?

But then towards the END of the article, the Rosenbaum Family spopkesman said that the Reverend “backed out like a coward, rather than use the opportunity to apologize to the Jewish Community.”

So I guess I’m a little confused as to exactly *what* the Reverend is supposed to do in a situation like this!

Trust me… I’m NO fan of the “Reverend Al”, mmmkay? (lol) But I can’t help but feel like it’s just a little unfair to 1st suggest the man NOT attend at all… and then when he cancels… you call him a coward for it? I don’t get it!

In any case… it probably wasn’t a very good idea in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, I think reconciliation & open discussion can promote a lot of healing! And I think if the Jewish community & the black community *did* get together… they’d probably find out that they share a LOT of the same struggles! *shrug* Just sayin…

This was win-win for Sharpton. He got attention whether he showed up or not.

One thing that hasn’t been mentioned in any of the articles or comments about the Crown Heights Pogrom is the “erased” 911 tapes. Over the three days, residents of Crown Heights made 100s of frantic calls begging for help. 911 operators mocked, taunted, the citizens begging for help. And then the tapes were “accidentally erased.” The city has never held anyone accountable for this. Is there really no archive of the 911 tapes for those three terrible days? Who was the custodian of those tapes? Who made the decision to erase those recordings while the episode was still playing out?

Is time to forgive! Rev Shropton He changed in his elder years and is much more mainstream now.

If he or anybody in the black community is wiling to discuss and share thoughts with us we should welcome it.

The childish actions will just bring more hate.

Shropton and others must apologize for the program and anti-Semites in his community, but we must also apologize for the racist in our community. We are not blameless

In post #15 by bigwheeel there is a typographical error. There is a letter S missing. In Parentheses. “20 Year” should read “20 Years”.
I wish VIN would enable post-publishing edits. Where each poster could edit their own piece by signing in with a personal code. Sometimes, typos go unnoticed until they’re published.
