Last updated on: August 28, 2011 11:59 AM
Spring Valley, NY - Monsey Hatzolah rushing Code-1 to Merrick Drive and Union Road for a live wire that fell down from the winds of Hurricane Irene injuring three victims including one trying to save a burning child.
RVAC, Hatzolah paramedics and Orange and Rockland Utility responding on a rush to the scene.
**UPDATE**
All being transported to Good Smarten Hospital, and child transferred to Westchester Medical Center.
**UPDATE**
VIN News has confirmed that one victim has been pronounced dead, and the 5-year-old child is in critical condition.
Officials say the good Samaritan was electrocuted trying to help a child who had gone into a flooded street that had live wires embedded in it.
A spokesman for the Rockland County Emergency Operations Center says the child is in very serious condition at Westchester Medical Center’s burn unit.
Spokesman Ron Levine says the child’s father was treated for burns at another hospital and released.
Levine says the youngster got caught in wires obscured in a flooded Spring Valley street Sunday afternoon. The village is about 30 miles northwest of Manhattan.
He says the child had to be taken by land with a police escort to the hospital because helicopters were grounded. It took 20 minutes to get the child there.

Why bother? Because maybe a parent will read this and think to bring the kids back inside especially if they are in Monsey. The police have requested over and over to stay inside unless it's an emergency. It's still windy and a live wire can come down at any time! Is it worth dying because you want to send the kinder outside?

do not know what happened but this is why one must report a downed power-line to 911 even on shabbos as opposed to Augudath Israel's instructions, which is irresponsible and dangerous
while this did not happen on shabbos it shows the danger of downed power line.
Their logic makes no sense, since they do not care about others who might be walking in the street or rescue workers or con Edison workers who might be in the area
5. If someone sees a power line fall and it poses a danger can one contact the authorities?
A person should never venture out during or right after a hurricane. Coming in contact with downed power lines could be fatal. Unless the power line could cause a serious danger to the people in the home, one should wait until after Shabbos to report it.

I'm not sure who posted nos. 1 or 17 but in any event he/she is correct. It was totally irresponsible and mindless to open schools today, since the decision was made early in the AM when conditions were still miserable. Its the first week of school anyway so nothing would have been lost by missing a day and allowing the students to work at home safely with their parents (who were also home from work on a weekend).

Guys...we just had a tragedy. Someone died while trying to save someone's life. WE should come together and mourn, not argue /condemn/judge others.
These things keep happening in our community..why don't we learn anything from it???
Why dont we all realize that all this bickering might actually be causing these things to happen...G-d is big enough to keep ppl safe no matter the conditions. If they should've been more careful is their issue. As a community we should just be supportive and loving , only like that may we be able to alleviate some of the sorrow and prevent some of the future calamities .

“ to you and to 43, 50, 59, 64, 69, 73. I did a google search as you suggested. Nothing comes up for mayor of Monsey. So a number of these posters are correct - apparently there really isnt one. On the other hand, the only relevant AND correct comment on this subject is 67. The story clearly says this was in Spring Valley and they do have a mayor and I know that because when I googled for a Monsey mayor a VIN story from Dec 09 came up about the swearing in of Spring Valley's new mayor.
In any case this is a terrible tragedy.

“ Monsey has a mayor? Who is the mayor?
Hint: Monsey is an unincorporated hamlet within Airmont. ”
BERNARD ROSENFELD is the mayor of Monsey and his office is in Kaiser which is part of Monsey. I get mailings from his office.

“ It is uncanny how your comments mirror those on the anti semitic website, lohud.com. I am sure you are proud of that fact. ”
Lohud is not antisemitic. It prints the news of all criminals, but just so happens that our group is busier on the criminal side than the goyim. The newspaper almost always posts pictures of black or hispanic criminals, and tries not to print pictures of frum. Many readers have protested that Lohud doesn't post pictures of our pedophiles because the readers want to see if they know the pedophiles.

Moshe Yosef was a wonderful person-I remember the day he walked into Ohr Someyach- so easy to get along with, never spoke poorly about anyone-at an Ohr Someyach dinner he told a story about how, after Meir Schuster gave him tefillin with the promise of putting it on every day, as he travelled around the world, he said “and I put it on every day-Shabbos, Yom Kippur”-it cracked the whole room up—no matter what troubles life handed him, he always seemed to handle them with an attitude that he understood that they were from Shemayim, and that somehow they were going to make him a better Jew-I am sorry that I hadn’t kept up with him over the years-He was a diamond of a person, and I am sure that he never thought of the danger to himself for a second when he was going in the water to try to save these children. I am deeply distressed that people would let their children go out and play outside after a hurricane with downed trees and wires everywhere-but-what can I say?–Moshe Yosef-You were a great friend in the years that we spent together in Ohe Someyach, and may your death somehow be a kaparra for the Jewish people to save us from more tragedy

For those of you judging, here's the story. There was a fire outside the night before with the wires. There was a police officer overnight securing the area. In the morning he left and they were told everything is fine. There was no rain outside, and the father and child went out in front of the house for a minute. The boy climbed the 'metal fence'! Since it was metal, it took less than a second and he was unconscious. The father ran to the childs rescue and got burnt just by touching his hand. The neighbor saw something is going on and ran to help. He was electrocuted at once and was DOA. The hatzolah members couldn't even get close to touch him...The boy is now in critical condition and this innocent neshamah unfortunately needs to have his arm amputated...Please...it's rosh chodesh Elul! Instead of judging, take out a tehillim and say some for this innocent soul! Besuros Tovos

esther - because someone criticizes what a frum yid did doesn't make him anti-semitic.
the hurricane was publicly reported to be from early Sunday until Sunday night. it was 800 miles wide. despite everyone being told to stay inside Sunday unless it was an emergency, people thought because the sky appeared clear-ish it was okay for them to ignore the experts.
I'm very sorry, but you are wrong that this was just an accident. with live wires and huge puddles, it was extremely negligent of the parents to allow a kid to go outside to play just because the cop left. it should have said something that the cop was there all night in the first place.

no one is speculating, it is obvious what happened.
The parents were extremely negligent knowing a live wire was outside in wet weather and letting their kid out of the house for any reason when every news report said it was unsafe to go out yet.
So don't give any of us mussar, and don't tell us "end of story". I'm surprised that the parents weren't charged with reckless endangerment and other charges.

Uh, no. Mr. Rosenfeld is the mayor the Village of Kaser, not of the unincorporated census tract of Monsey, his Monsey Post Office box notwithstanding.
Not that this is relevant to the poor boy, his poor father, and his deceased (o.b.m.) neighbor, who were injured in the Village of Spring Valley, not Monsey.

“ then getting off the bus
no matter it was a stupid and dangerous decision to open the schools
when it come to this matters the professionals know much more than the robonum
Torah knowledge does not give you knowledge about safety issues and protocols.
PS this is a new phenomena that Torah greatness makes you an expert in almost everything else it doesn't .
When it comes to fire safety, hurricane safety whether to open a school or not listen to the experts not a rov who knows zero about such issues ”
"then getting off the bus"
you expect me to believe that the bus let him off in the middle of a flooded area, on top of downed power wires? Riiiiight.
"Torah knowledge does not give you knowledge about safety issues and protocols."
Torah knowledge gives you insight into everything. The world was created with the Torah as a blueprint, remember?
If you have difficulty believing that, perhaps I can recommend a different religion to you ...

there is nothing "disgusting" about the comments just because you don't like them, and no one is "judging them".
The facts are the facts, and they don't change because they reflect badly on someone who suffered a loss.
