(AP Photo/Mary Altaffer)New York – Brooklyn residents made history as they turned out in force to elect a Republican to a congressional seat that has been held by the Democrats since the 1920’s. In a widely watched race that was both about the actual candidates and local residents sending a clear message of dissatisfaction to President Obama on several issues particularly his stance on Israel, it was Brooklyn residents gave Republican Bob Turner an overwhelming victory over Democrat David Weprin, giving him 67% of the vote.

It was clear that Brooklyn’s Jewish community was staunchly behind Turner as his victory speech was peppered with enthusiastic cheering from the crowd which included chants of “Mazel Tov!” amid shouts of “Thank you, Bob!” and “Turner, Turner, Turner!”

Many Jewish supporters and politicians were present at Turner’s victory speech last night, with high profile politicians former Mayor Edward Koch and Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who both crossed party lines to support the Republican candidate, in attendance as well.

Turner gave his speech surrounded by his large family, which includes five children and fifteen grandchildren, and said he hoped to set an example to others who are not in the political arena to step up, get involved and make a difference in their community.

It was clear from his victory speech that he understood, that at least for Brooklyn residents, both the economy and Obama’s stance on Israel are very serious issues.

“Mr. President, we are on the wrong track,” said Turner in his victory speech. “We have had it with your irresponsible fiscal policy which endangers the entire economy and every one of our social safety networks. We have had it with your treatment of Israel.”

Turner went on to warn Washington that his victory is a clear indicator that America is not happy with the current state of affairs.

“This was a historic race. We are sending a message to Washington. I hope they hear it loud and clear.”

NY Assemblyman Hikind released the following statement this morning on the Turner win:

I am thrilled that the voters of the 9th congressional district exhibited their independence in voting Bob Turner into office in a sweeping and decisive victory, with 67% of the vote in Brooklyn. Residents across Queens and Brooklyn sent a clear message to President Obama that they will no longer tolerate the broken economy, the lack of jobs, and the countless Americans who are struggling financially and are out of work.

Bob Turner’s values were consistent with those of the district, unlike David Weprin, who stood up on the floor of the Assembly, identified himself as a practicing, Orthodox Jew, and proclaimed his unequivocal and proud support for gay marriage in New York State. Weprin’s vote crossed the line, and ultimately, it was the cause of his undoing in this election.

Voters also communicated their displeasure with Mr. Obama’s anti-Israel policies, his irresponsible spending programs, and his efforts to send Medicare and Social Security to the brink of bankruptcy.

Like many proud Democrats, I went to the polls yesterday and cast my vote for Republican Bob Turner because it is imperative that regardless of party affiliation, we elect the best candidate to represent our interests. That is exactly what occurred last night in the 9th congressional district, and I congratulate and commend Mr. Turner on his exciting and important triumph.”

My opinion, yidden have to stay out of the lime light, its in no ones best interest to show off with Jewish power, when you’re electing a local politician – which is fully understanable – its not the same as “sending a message to Obama” where the entire nation has to see us in the headlines..

All those “conservative, right wing” frummies and chassidim who supported the Republican are no doubt lining up to give up whatever assistance they get from the Federal and State government programs, right???

Uch this makes me sick to my stomach.

Sending a message to Obama?? as if he’s another Hitler…
For what? the crime of not being as gung ho as George Bush was??
This….a week after saving the lives of 6 Israelis in Egypt..
After coming through for Israel time and time again…
For using Avericas veto in the UN again and again for Israel…

Gates was right when he said..Jews are ungrateful.

Not really a good indicator…several months ago, a historically Republican district upstate elected a democratic challenger to congress in the special election. Obama will still be around for another term, given the current Republican options.

It is unfortunate to see Orthodox Jews showing more enthusiasm for a Catholic politician than a Rosh Yeshiva.

To #3- I liked what you paraphrased. Regarding Turner’s victory, I would also like to paraphrase what FDR stated on Dec. 8, 1941, in a speech to Congress:

“With the unbounded determination of our people, we have gained the inevitable triumph, so help us G-d”.

The real irony here is that if Weprin had been a non-Jew, he probably would have won! His pro-toaiyva vote, would have still upset the frum community, but it was that it came from a SUPPOSEDLY frum Jew that really infuriated the frum community and got us out to vote.

Plus some teabag (note I intentionally don’t call them Republican) Governors in swing states are gasping for air — Wisconsin, Florida, Maine and Ohio

OK instead of answering all of your smart points I will just leave it at this, “The bottom line is..where is your gratefulness? (from a human perspective)”
What are talking about, I don’t owe Obama anything, true he’s my president but together with a majority of Americans I think he’s doing a bad job, and he’s not an old lady I don’t need to give him a medal every time he does something good, as President of the greatest country in the world, he has a considerable amount of political clout, and used it in a good way in this case, but to start praising him, as if he’s the best man Israel ever had, would be a lie as much as you really smart liberal Jew’s want us to believe.

Where did some of you go to school? Trying to read some of these entries is virtually impossible due to such poor grammar and sentence structure. I won’t even mention punctuation – or rather, the lack of it. It makes it extremely difficult to understand what you are trying to say. Comment # 24 has used a lot of commas and not much else. There is one period at the end of his comment. It is one gigantic sentence with very little meaning. Since so many in the world consider Yidden to be such intelligent people, it is a good thing that not many “outsiders” know about this site. Their opinions would change in a heartbeat.

This was more about Weprin losing the frum vote with his gay marriage vote and his “I’m not running for Rosh Yeshiva” comment and MUCH less to do with the inept occupiers of the White House.
