Rick Perry of Texas also visited, Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, in New York. (AP Photo/Louis Lanzano)Manhattan, NY – Texas Gov. Rick Perry received an unexpected welcome to New York City Monday — when Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel turned up at the Republican presidential hopeful’s Harlem fundraiser.

After arriving at the Papasito Mexican Grill, Rangel said he understood that “one of the community leaders had invited a distinguished guest — to my city and specifically to my congressional district.”

“I wanted to make him feel comfortable. I would not embarrass him here,” Rangel said, according to Politico.

Asked his opinion of Perry, Rangel replied, “He’s tall and he’s from Texas.”

But after suggesting he was there simply to welcome the Texan to the state of New York, Rangel went on to criticize Perry’s record on executions and said “he’s the best thing going for President Obama,” CBS News reported.

“I think that the Republicans have a major problem with their candidates,” he said when asked about the GOP field.

Quizzed if that included Perry, Rangel replied, “You bet your life. I think he’s the best thing going for President Obama, but I’m a Democrat.”

Rangel’s office later released a statement slamming Perry’s “frightening record of executing his constituents” and criticizing him for “calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme.”

Texas has executed 234 prisoners since Perry became governor in 2000, more than any other governor in modern times.

“The governor could come back to our district anytime he wants because his visit only reinforces the need for us to rally around the president’s plan to reduce the deficit in a fiscally responsible way,” Rangel added in his statement.

Can someone please explain how social security is not a ponzi scheme? My understanding of ponzi scheme is that A takes B’s money and promises him interest on it. In the mean time A uses up the money so in order to maintain payments on B’s interest, A convinces C to give money with the promise of interest. In the meantime A uses C’s money to pay B’s interest payments and on other expenses and he now has to pay C’s interest so he goes to D etc. etc.
    How is social security different?

Calling Social Security a ‘Ponzi Scheme’ is like walking your grandmother to the door and laughing at her as you lock the door on her when she leaves. Cursed is the man who hates the security of the elderly and the infirm. Right?

    I guess Rangel couldn’t afford Obama’s $71,600-a-plate dinner.

I guess its newsworthy what Rangel called Perry. But what Perry could have called Rangel won’t be stated by the media. Isn’t that brilliant! How about corrupt? That’s documented. How about a financial and tax cheat? That is also a matter of record. Etc. What a shame the black community continues to place their faith in someone with such dishonesty as his middle name.
