Avenue J Subway Station Sign Vandalized And Renamed Avenue “Jew” om Nov. 16 2011Brooklyn, NY – Less than a week after an arson and hate crime in Midwood, Brooklyn which resulted in the torching and burning of several vehicles, as well as anti-Semitic graffiti, vandals have struck again, this time defacing the Avenue J subway sign by adding the letters “EW,” so the station name read “Avenue JEW.”

A concerned constituent who saw the grafittied sign while on the train snapped a photo and contacted Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn). The Transit Police have since removed the sign and are investigating this incident as a bias crime.

“Education and vigilance are our only weapons in fighting against this blatant hatred,” said Hikind. “We must send a message to those who perpetrate these vile acts that we will not tolerate their behavior. These cowards need to know that we will find them wherever they lurk, and when we do, we will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.”

Yesterday, Hikind announced that the reward money for credible information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for last week’s hate crime had increased to $56,000. Anyone with information relating to that crime is urged to call the NYPD tip hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).

Chevra, there are trouble makers all over. But out of town we don’t feel like we “own” the place and have a “right” to be there. We are not so delicate and sensational. When something happens, the police are alerted and they do their jobs shtilerheit. Stop going crazy about everything. We are in galus and the more everything is thrown in everyone’s face the mire we are disliked. Tell the police and shaaaaaaaaa.

I kind of like Avenue Jew. They should officially rename it.

Just another reminder that we are in Galus. We should “thank them” for these antisemitic acts.

Kinda pathetic actually. Only cowards and cockroaches are afraid to be seen. Let them try this in the open.

There IS another weapon. It’s called ‘wake up and smell the coffee’.

there will be a few copy cat crimes since many time that is what happens in well publicized crimes any crimes

most likely a few loser who want to get some kicks

not organized like in Germany, a few incidents does not make a wave just like a few hate crimes on blacks those not mean slavery is coming back

stop the nonsense to compare this to Germany

read history and see the difference this is a few incidents there is no rash of antisemitic actions by groups and or government

out of 300,000,000 people of course you will find a few that hate Jews no news

I am sure i can find a few Jews that hate goyin

what happens if it was not meant as a negative, but as a sign by a jewish kid as “tagging” our area?
i can understand immediatly saying anti semitism if the kid painted ike after avenue k, but jew hasnt been a deragoatory term since at least the middle ages.

Let’s not compare graffitti with torching cars.

As for the name, if the shoe fits……….

If this had happened in parts of Manhattan, cameras would have picked it up. Same with London. It’s time for the NYPD to electronically monitor the area.

It was probably a Jewish kid who named it that. Anyway, I kind of like it, even if I grew up on Ocean Parkway between M and N. This was back in the day when Ocean Parkway was Jewish and primarily secular.

Look, it is better that these meshuganahs go around vandalizing cars, and subway station signs, than by beating up Yidden. Eventually, these miscreants will be caught. Regarding Avenue J, I have pleasant memories of the Avenue J community, as I grew up in that area. In December, 1954, I remember the opening day of the Midwood Library, on E. 17th St., just to the north of Avenue J; also, in June, 1961, I remember when the Yeshivah of Flatbush High School was dedicated on Avenue J, and Gov. Nelson Rockefeller used a shovel to perform the groundbreaking ceremony; also, Cantor Moshe Koosevitsky sang at the ceremony.

In the old area of Johannesburg where most of the yidden lived is called Yeoville, everyone called it Jewville too. I kind if think its cute.

While it is disturbing with the recent happenings around the neighborhood, when I saw the picture, I started laughing because well, yeah, Avenue J has become much more frum in the past 20 years!

Every single subway platform should be equipped with video cameras.

This IS horrible. Hatred unfortunately goes both ways. To say only non jews are racist would be lie. As I have heard ears fulls of nasty vicious comments come from our very own. Hopefully there can be strong presence of safety and also more education. The tension and racism from both sides is too much. Granted that when a yid is racist it is mostly words. when a non jew is racist they sometimes escalate it to being aggressive physically. Both types of aggression need to stop. PEACE

This was NOT anti-semitic, destruction of property..yes! The word was completed in an artistic and colorful way, there were no swastikas or ethnic slurs. It looks like there was a childish pride taken in the bubble type drawing of the letters…not angry hate.
