Rockland County, NY - Police have arrested a 38-year-old Village of New Square man on 30 charges in connection with an investigation into alleged sexual abuse of a young boy.

Hershel Taubenfeld of New Square was charged with 30 counts of sexual abuse, all misdemeanors.

Ramapo Town Police received a complaint of possible sexual abuse in New Square in November. They investigated and on December 7, charges were filed against Taubenfeld. On Wednesday morning, he turned himself in with his attorney.

He was charged with the inappropriate conduct in his home over a five month period from March to July 2011.

According to the Rockland County Times, police are likely to arrest others in Taubenfeld’s circle in the coming weeks.

Taubenfeld was arraigned and remanded to the Rockland County Jail on $15,000 bail pending a future court appearance.

do you mean "was the community given an opportunity to sweep things under the carpet first?"?

The sad part is that these cases always include mulitple counts (in his case 30!) after one abuse he should have been reported, but b'h it was reported altogether!

What does that mean? Consulted about what? about turning him in? Are you being serious?
Any "rav" that advises a person or persons to not turn these animals in should a) not be called a rav and b) should be charged as some kind of accessory.
Any rav, if consulted, should have an automatic response to go straight to the police and not to come to them with these issues. This is a police matter not a rabbinic one.
We are talking about child abuse here. If God forbid this was your child, would you honestly consult a rav before getting this person off the street?

You want a Rov? Yes, the overwhelming rov-majority of rabbonim and decent human beings say to go to the police when a child has been sexually molested. Only child molesters and NAMBLA advocate not going to the police. Remember, we live in a civilized society guided by the Torah and halacha. Halacha clearly states that a child molester is a rodef and the laws of mesirah do not apply to a rodef. Any more questions?

Not that any is okay, however 30 counts does not mean 30 incidents. I was on a Jury and each incident had multiple accounts. 30 counts can be just a few incidents. Agian, the first is wrong but 30 does not mean 30 occurances.

We all owe a big thank you to Dr Asher Lipner, it was the conference he arranged in 2009 that brought so many frum therapists together, and played a huge part in bringing out this issue in our communities, which led to today where even Rabbi's are no longer being tolerant of the sexual abusers in our midst.

No - the saddest aspect is that he was only charged with misdemeanors, not felonies.

you don't have to.....most gedoilim have given a psak that a molester has a din of a roidef, and you can go straight to the authorities....so rather than cover for them, as you seem to be doing, speak to a gadol first before you question someones actions....

he was only charged not convicted....which ruv allowed this person to be posted on line and made to shame without finding him guilty.?

As american law and halachic law indicates innocent until proven guilty... Its only one case (one person) and there was doubts from day one (not saying anything and I strongly believe that this people should be punished, but there was stories before where victim (not real) made up stories for their own benefits)

18

Dec 14, 2011 at 09:15 PM Anonymous Says:

I sure hope he is innocent. There are a lot of worried parents tonight in Monsey about this. As for #1 regarding consulting a rav, if there are allegations, the public should know to keep their kids away from him until he is cleared if he is not guilty especially with a guy who is around kids alot.

Maybe he is only guilty of misdemeanors. Maybe he didn't do anything serious enough to warrant a stronger punishment. Don't jump the gun! Maybe the community did the right thing and stopped him before he did enough to ruin a child's life.
And to all those that say here we go again... Of course this will happen again. We are B"H a big community. The law of averages says we will have our share of mentally ill people. We are not immune to that.

I promise that anyone who has ever been closly involved with a case of a person being falsly accused of molestation & then being arrested & having to go through the hell AKA the booking - bail process , wouldn't be so trigger happy to convict a person being accused.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !!wait for some facts before you lynch this guy , if it turns out he is guilty, I will be the first to tar & feather him , but till then hold your horses....

An anonymous writer claims on the internet that he heard from an unnamed source that the story isn't true - well that should be good enough for the DA and the rest of us.

The DA should drop the charges and apologize and everyone else should hire him as a babysitter.

It bleeds my heart to hear how (seemingly) yiddin jump in excitement when another yid is sick! if this man did do it, it should cause sleepless nights for all of us rather than the "I knew it" or "you see, yiddin are just as bad as gentiles" or "I told you so" or "There are many more" ('these ............ yiddin").

Just as another point, Yes we are yiddin first! We do do everything al daas torah! Yes We must present every problem related to our torah to a rav. Just as a eye opener to all rabbi haters, (you definitely didn't go to all the ravs and you still label them all "they will never be matir") I do know of 3 stories where nebach a yid was sick, the nebach kids father went to a rav and they got a hetter right away! (actually the rav called them afterwards to ensure they did contact the authorities immediately!) Sooo all these rants, are bogus! Obviously not in every instance would this rav be mattir to be mosur, they listen to the whole story, when they feel that it's not totally rubbish, or that there is a possibility, they were matir! But they decided if there was any basis to the claim based on the evidence!

Your are 100% wrong. In most cases the Rav does nothing and protects the abuser. The victim is ostrasized along with the family. I've been there and done that and have suffered for years and years.

What a fairy tale.

I'll bet any amount you'd like that you cannot tell us the name of the rov in your story.

The Crown Heights Beis Din published a public letter in July saying that it is not only muttar, but one is CHAYAV to go to the authorities, and that the abuser has the din of a rodef. So that's three names.
