Borough Park, NY – At a private meeting today, 12-year-old Alter Pinter and his father, Sruly Pinter, finally got the chance to personally thank Mr. John Giuffre vice president of the Bay Ridge Automotive Management Corporation in Brooklyn, for giving them a 2012 Toyota Sienna Mobility Edition van absolutely free.

Because of Mr. Giuffre’s tremendous modesty, he declined to participate in the December 12 ceremony when representatives from Bay Ridge Toyota and Toyota of Manhattan presented the Pinter family with the keys to the $50,000 vehicle. Alter lost both legs and nearly his life last year after a battle with a bacterial infection and a severe case of swine flu. Prior to receiving the handicapped-accessible vehicle, the only way for Alter to get into the family car was to be carried from his wheelchair.
Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn), who was also present at today’s meeting remarked, “John’s kindness and immense heart are unparalleled. I am awed and inspired by his generosity and his commitment to improving the quality of life for those who are less fortunate. His actions are the quintessential example of what one can achieve when they care enough to make a difference. John is truly the hero of this story.”
Hikind was initially approached by Mekimi Chairman of the Board Chesky Kauftheil about the Pinter family. Mekimi (www.mekimi.org), which provides a host of support services to children and young adults who are combating cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, has been working extensively to help the Pinter family. Soon after, Hikind met with the boy and his family to ascertain their exact needs and immediately contacted John to ask for his assistance. “It was not even a question for him,” remarked Hikind. “He said he just had to work out the logistics, but that he would have the car ready for the family within three weeks and he did. He is nothing short of remarkable.”
