Jerusalem - Rabbi Dov Lipman, who has been campaigning against ultra-Orthodox extremism in Beit Shemesh, has threatened to sue Beit Shemesh Mayor Moshe Abutbol for libel following a recent interview with the mayor published in the weekly Ami Magazine on January 4.

Lipman, who heads the Committee to Sace Beit Shemesh, has taken particular issue with how Abutbol described him as having “fought against every building that went up to house haredim, night and day.” Abutbol also said in the interview that he “condemn[s] Dov Lipman and his cohorts who have been a thorn in the side of Bet Shemesh for years.”

In a letter sent on Monday to the mayor, Lipman’s lawyers, ‏Azulay, Afik ,Ettinger & Co., state that legal proceedings will be taken against him unless he issues a retraction of his statements in the interview with Ami and pays NIS 127,000 in damages to Lipman.

Wow, this Lipman guy is worse than I thought!

I don't see what the libel is, Abutbul only said the (not so pretty) truth. It might of not been proper for Abutbul to make such public statements, but that's (unfortunately) the way it works in Israel. Nothing out of the ordinary here.

Can you personally confirm the accuracy of this statement: "fought against every building that went up to house haredim, night and day”? If you can't then why are you opening your mouth to criticize?

If it's the truth, then it won't be libel. Let the court decide.

YJay1, The libel is that Abutbol straight out lied. In every single interview and article by or about Rabbi Lipman, as well as in every personal conversation I've had with him he makes it very clear that his goal is to have EQUAL affordable opportunity housing for the general population.

He defines himself Chareidi and is certainly not anti-chareidi. He's anti-illegal and bullying behavior, and has worked tirelessly to fight the injustices found in our city. By claiming as the Mayor did, that he works against Chareidi buildings is false slander, hurts Rabbi Lipman's reputation (which is excellent around here) and he deserves to have that cleared.

I would just like to say that I was a bochur in Beis Medrash with Rabbi Lipman in Eretz Yisroel, and he was a very shtark and ehrlich person, which it sounds like he still is today. It does not surprise me in the least that he fights for all yidden, and has the backbone to stand up to those who try to bully and lie to get their way.

I don't think it's far from the truth. Who says that the Mayor is spewing Lies. The Mayor is doing his job and he is being villified for no good reason. If anybody listed to the speech of Mrs. Margolese. She stated that there is a community being built for 30,000 chareidim and nobody asked the veteran citizens first. Excuse me, since when does one Jew need to ask another to build in the Jewish State. The Natl religious community hate the mayor because he is not buying into their act. While the violence is not made up .. it's being used for political reasons.. They had no right to bring this to the international media and especially to the anti religious Yair Lapid. The media blitz on that child is way more traumatizing than the action that happened.

This is the media, this is what you get when you live a public life. What about freedom of speech?
I don't get this at all.
I don't know the mayor and I don't know Rabbi Lipman. I just know that I hate the violence and I am extremely anti the crazy extremists that have taken over he Chareidi religion and they have made a bad name for us all. I have spoken out against them yet I still get lumped together with them because I am Chareidi. Tough luck. How much more for a public figure like Rabbi Lipman.

You're missing one important point. If you actually listen to her speech, you'll see that she said the new 30,000 buildings planned are RAK (ONLY) for Chareidim. No way are we as a city ok with that, the general population would like the next generation to have affordable options to stay in Bet Shemesh also.
In addition, the housing ministry is breaking 97 laws in the process of trying to get this new 'chareidi' neighborhood built, which we are fighting with every resource possible- NOT to ban new chareidim from moving in, we welcome chareidim who will live chareidi lives and live peacefully alongside non-chareidim living non-chareidi lives, but we want equal opportunity housing for all.

"Who says that the Mayor is spewing Lies."

Rabbi Lipman says so, and he and his lawyer are willing to go to court to defend the good Rabbi against these lies. If what the Mayor says is the truth or even "not far from the truth", the Mayor will have the chance to prove so in court. So what's the problem?

But if the mayor isn't allowed to slander the Rabbi in the media (besides being oiver on loshon horah) then it should go both ways and the anti-Chareidim shouldn't be able to slander innocent Chareidim in the media either.

If you read the article it says that 1,500 residences are being built for the Dati Leumi alone.. 300 for the secular.. They are building 4,000 apartments in total.. But truthfully it should not be up to you or any other Jew whom lives where in Israel.. that's a lot of nerve..

100 percent.. The media isn't differentiating between the extremists and the run of the mill Chareidi.. it's not extremist children/adults who are getting attacked because of the backlash from this incident.. libel suits can go both ways.

But 99.999% of secular people are not in favour of murder, rape, etc - they have laws against it and believe in punishing those that commit them.

The Chareidim, on the other hand, refuse to criticise the extremists in their midst. I'm not saying that they are all extremists - of course not - but they make all sorts of excuses for them.

As for your second point, the fact is that most new housing in Beit Shemesh is being built in the new Charedi neighborhood. Theoreteically, datiim and seculars can live there but everyone knows that they won't.

Yet another post full of naarishkeit.

First stupidity: "Most secular Jews are just not happy". International opinion polls consistently show that Israelis have a higher degree of happiness than the people of most other peoples.

Second stupidity: "Can you say something good [about the medina]? I'd like to hear it." What an asinine statement. The middah ro'oh of kafui tovah is so entrenched among the Israeli-bashers that I'd be wasting my time to list all the good things about the medina. But I'll make a start anyway (not for you, but for other readers). Frum Jews have more rights and political power in Israel than in any other country in the world. Israel has the most yeshivos, kollelim, sefarim, learning (much of which is paid for by the state). Even secular Israelis have higher levels of shemiras shabbos, kashrus, mezuzah, etc. etc. Israel is a political haven for Jews fleeing from other countries ..

Third stupidity: You think it's absurd to say that Chareidim don't contribute. Well, in on many levels they don't. They are a massive drain on the Israeli economy and they don't fight in the army.

Your last sentence was actually 100% correct. But it was a typo

No I am not . Just check every single blog post about this issue.. calling the mayor a liar.. etc etc.. it's all over the internet.. The Beit Shemesh community alligned itself with the anti-religious press and politicians basically putting us ALL in a precarious situation .It's not even zionist to do that. The left want to give away the entire EY and you are playing into their hands. I consider the residents of BS to be Jews. The community could have worked with the Mayor but they chose not to. They knew full well that the nutcase sikrikim were there but chose to put the girls school their anyway.. The BS community has hated the mayor since day one because he is chareidi.. This mayor has tirelessly tried to please everybody but it seems he can't please the Dati Leumi. The violence is the responsibility of the police .. not the mayor.

as for the second point.. that is THEIR choice.. to call the mayor a liar is disgusting and libelous.. especially when it's not even true.
