Utility workers used heavy machinery to grind up the wrongly placed “H’’ and “C’’ in the “SHCOOL X-NG” sign on Tuesday.
The correction was made a day after the New York Post reported the spelling error.
The words were created with industrial textured tape that permanently sticks to the asphalt.
The Consolidated Edison utility told the Post (http://nyp.st/A41ber ) the blunder occurred when a contractor ripped up the street for utility work and replaced the existing markings. It says the mistake outside the Manhattan building that houses three schools had been there since July 2010.

Will Con Ed make the contractor eat the cost of sending the crew and equipment to make the correction? -- Or will Con Ed pass the cost along to the ratepayers?

I remember a few years ago when they replaced the MERCER street sign to MERSER. Was quite funny then too.
