Members of the South Korea’s livestock farmers associations rally in front of the second government complex in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, 27 April 2012, to demand the government immediately stop the import of US beef as a case of mad cow disease was recently confirmed in California. The associations made the demand while recalling the government’s 2008 promise to do so following a nationwide protest against the resumption of the import of US beef after vehement controversy over the deadly animal disease. Following the latest outbreak, the Seoul government decided not to suspend US beef imports but to increase quarantine checks, insisting it would immediately stop imports if the disease poses threats to public health.
