Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (C) and his wife Sara (L) light candles at the ‘Gleis 17’ (platform 17) memorial to Jews deported from Berlin, in Berlin, Germany, 06 December 2012. German leader Angela Merkel rebuked Israel over its plans for new settlements in Palestinian areas, after talks with visiting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Her criticism was however milder than that from other European nations which have summoned Israeli envoys over its plan to build 3,000 new homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. ‘On the settlement issue, we are in agreement that we are not in agreement,’ Merkel told a joint press conference with Netanyahu. ‘But that is a matter that has been often discussed.’ Merkel routinely stresses Germany’s strong support for the state of Israel but relations have been frostier in recent days.
