Latvia’s European Parliament deputy Tatjana Zhdanoka (C) joins an Association against Nazism counter demonstrators to protest a controversial march in Riga, Latvia, 16 March 2012 commemorating the Latvian Waffen SS units, also known as the Latvian Legion, who fought on the side of Nazi-Germany during World War II. A counter-demonstration by the Association against Nazism was held simultaneously in the Latvian capital. Reportedly some 160.000 Latvians, either as volunteers or later as forced conscripts, served as troops for Nazi-Germany following the occupation of Latvia in 1941. Many of them were volunteers for the Nazi ‘Waffen SS’ legion.
