Warsaw Jews Mark Uprising Anniversary With Torah Burial

Location: WARSAW, Poland
April 19, 2017

Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich during the burial ceremony of Torah scrolls at the Jewish cemetery in Warsaw in ocassion of the 74th anniversary of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto, Poland, 19 April 2017. The pre-war scrolls of the Torah have survived the Holocaust, but because of the destruction have been withdrawn from the religious use. In the Jewish tradition, the Torah scroll has the status of a human being. If the roll is damaged enough that its repair is impossible, it should be buried. This kind of ceremony takes place in Poland for the first time since the interwar period. The scrolls are hidden in clay pots next to the place where the ashes of victims of the Ghetto Uprising rest.
