May 2, 2012

Macedonian special police forces escort an arrested suspect related to the killing of five people on the Smiljkovci lake, in Skopje, FYROM, 02 May 2012. Macedonian authorities said 01 May that police had arrested 20 suspected Islamic extremists in connection with five execution-style murders which have reignited ethnic tensions in the country. The suspects were ethnic Albanians who allegedly fought alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan, police said, and were accused of killing five men near a reservoir not far from Skopje on April 12. Raids carried out in several areas had revealed weapons, Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska said, though they would need to be forensically examined to determine whether they had been used in the murders. She said the killers had chosen their victims randomly in order to sow fear and uncertainty and increase ethnic tensions.
